Silly Bandz

Yesterday afternoon, I spent 20 minutes at the Hallmark store waiting in line for something really worthwhile.

A dozen plastic bracelets fashioned into the shape of animals.

"They're not bracelets!" screamed my son. "They're silly bandz!"

Bracelets are for girls. Silly bandz are for everyone.

The non-bracelets are the hot item at my kids' elementary school these days. Based upon my observations at the bus stop, silly bandz are objects that are to be worn, traded, and at some point, put into your mouth.

"If I see you nibbling on those things one more time," warned a mother to her third-grade daughter, "I'm going to take them away."

"Where did you get that gum?" I asked Kellen this morning. "You know you can't chew gum at school."

My son responded by spitting a wad of rubber bands into his palm. Just then, the bus pulled up. He deposited all of the bracelets onto his wrist except for a saliva-drenched giraffe, which he put into my hand.

"You can have that one," he said, running down the street.

His generosity overwhelmed me.

  1. Oh yes! They are all the rage! However, in the 2nd grade at our school, they are currently being upstaged by the Mighty Beanz. I'm wondering what kind of crap I can jack up the price on & market as the next coolest thing.

  2. Good thing the swine flu vaccine is about to expire... not that we'll need it with all the extra spit going around!

  3. a class mom brought those bands in as a treat for St. Patty's day party. my kid got a "duck" band. he started snapping it on his wrist and it broke. tears were shed and his standard statement when any cheap toy breaks, "you have to go get me a new one. i want another one. i broke it and it's your fault. i need a new one." take care.

  4. Oh my goodness they are out of control in our school. But the kids sit on the playground and trade them like they are baseball cards. The problem is that these kids have like 90 on each arm? Some over indulgent parent bought 90?

  5. I haven't heard of these things, but then again, Utah is so far behind, we will see them in 5 years or so!

  11. Sketcher's sparkly "Twinkle Toes" are all the rage in my area. $60 for a pair of non-lacing sneakers with rhinestones on the toes. Or else $75 for the furry boots with the same bling. It will be 100 degrees outside and those skinny girls will still be wearing those boots. Like eskimos on vacation!

  12. When I taught school several years ago it was giga (sp) pets. I was the meanest teacher - I let some girls pet die because I wouldn't let her get it from her back pack. all I can say is - what next?!

  13. I have a baby, but my friend who works at a toy store was telling me about them. I couldn't believe it when she told me that she has parents who request to be personally called the moment Silly Bandz hit the shelves at her store. Those people are making bank, and they inspired me to come up with my own product idea: http://www.everybodylovesbaby.com/english/money-matters/patent-pending/

  19. ok honestly, im a 13 year old girl and even in my school they are the "thing" now a days. i am proud to say that my dance school started this when one of the teachers brought it in as a prize for doing the dance with the most emotion...then we found out where to buy them. at one point i had forty and currently on my way to get more because i want the dinosaur ones..... f

for all those moms out there that think that there kids are growing up too fast, don't worry once they hit about my age they will begin to think that princesses are the coolest things, the best box of crayons to buy is the 150 crayon colorwheel from crayola, and dinosaurs are the coolest thing ever now. i used to take life too fast and now i come home and color in my disney princess coloring book with my mom.

getting your child these could get them out of the "webkinz" stage and also your sons out of the "pokemon" stage just think of it this way.....a pack of silly bandz is 5 dollars and one pack of pokemon cards and a webkin is each at least $12.00.

  20. oh geez these things are big here in SC too. My son gets them at school from his teacher for good behavior, the kids all have to earn them I guess, he's got about 4 or 5 of them now. They look like they'll pull the hair off of your arm and I'm lucky he's got skinny little wrists or they'd cut off his circulation.

  22. These Silly Bandz are pretty nuts right now. I just read about stores on the east coast going out of stock. This reminds me of the Pet Rock thing back in the old days...

  23. I'm a 7th grader in Florida. To me, it's a waste of money and time. Is there even a point to it? Sure, they're fun to look at, but I don't get why people need to buy them by the bagfull. I don't even have one. IT's like 3 years ago, when everyone at school had a webkinz. I really don't get the point of it all.

no way no how, don't matter what
craze is to start there is no one
can convince me that plastic in mass form no matter what cool shape is good for childrens arms wrists,
For truly circulation, allergies to plastic, for it is summer... just please realize the skin is an open pore
For there is no good of nasty plastic being against you childs arm all the time
and so many children chewing on them
and piling them up, what for someone to
make a dollar, come on as if the oil spill is enough damage on the planet
give this whole thing away don't let it come in, for take care of children
    by simple "no"
really this whole thing no good....
Don't be controlled by fads or desire
and for god's sake plastic on your childrens wrists... god bless
