Turn off the Screen Week!
Yesterday, my kids brought home this piece of paper from school:
In unrelated news, this morning our school district's teacher's union announced that they will be going on strike next week. School will be canceled for up to five days.
If that happened to me, I think it would finally send me over the edge. It did say "unless school related." I think if school is out, I'd pretend we were having school at home and make a way it was "school related."
This is sad. I hope they can work things out. I am a teacher and we came very close to striking this year. I think you should disregard the assignment for now.
Perfect! We are having a screen-free week, too, but so far we still have school tomorrow. I heard about a school in Utah that had their screen-free week during spring break. They had the audacity to suggest that students spend some of their new-found free time fundraising for the school. I don't think the parents could find the goodwill for it.
Hahaha....that is so hilar...horrible! I think each teacher should spend 3 hours with each of their children at home WITHOUT the tv on. That would be awesome!
I think they know exactly how to get what they want. BTW- I wonder if they would stick to that in school, seeing as my kindergartener reports watching Disney Channel at school. Tax dollars at work.
I burst out laughing when I read the last part of your "unrelated" news! I say go for it! You can start a quilting project with your kids each making a square with their specific interests designed within. Then have each of them pick a recipe online to try and cook with you this week. Also, you can go on a walk and have a "find something that starts with each letter of the alphabet" while you snap photos of your happy children to mount in their individual scrapbooks. Oh the fun you'll have this week!!! (lol - or maybe you can see if you can break the "how long can we watch tv" in one day record!)
Hey...It says a prize will be given for completing the PLEDGE - not the actual turning off of the screens! I have found your loophole! You return the pledge and then let them do whatever keeps them quiet while they're stuck at home!
I'm a teacher and not all kids watch Disney Movies at school. We've watched two movies this year solely for a behavior celebration.
It surprises me how little parents know of what goes into educating their children.
I also think it's not asking that much to have the screens off. The problem with kids these days are they are too use to heading straight to t.v./video games/computer when they get home. And parents indulge this lazy creative free behavior.
I'm tired of the public assuming that they know how hard and how much work it really takes to be an educator.
Boo hoo a whole week with your kids at home. What a chore, maybe you'll stop taking their eduction for granted
