A Whale of a Wedding

My sister's wedding invitation arrived in the mail this week. Everything was perfectly normal about it, right down to the whale-shaped confetti that poured out of the envelope in large quantities.

In my daily phone call to my sister, I tried really hard not to talk about the confetti. Instead, I talked about the book that I was reading at the moment--Moby Dick.

"Why don't you just ask me why I'm having a whale wedding?" she sighed. I sensed a slight agitation in her voice.

Actually, the thought had never crossed my mind. Most brides want to be associated with Shamu on their wedding day.

"I happen to like whales," she stated. "There's so much you can do with them decoration-wise."

"Mmm hmmm," I agreed.

After taking a few moments to visualize the reception hall, I said, "I assume that you're serving seafood."

"What makes you think that?" she wanted to know.

I apologized immediately for drawing a logical conclusion.

"We're having burritos and enchiladas," she told me.

This announcement required me to visualize a whale wearing a sombrero, something that I wouldn't wish upon anybody.

My sister has a good sense of humor and approved this post.

  2. LOL! Wow. What else is there to say? Wow.
Maybe that's why she wanted you to wear that dress...?

  4. Ha ha! My brother and S-I-L had a dolphin-themed wedding, complete with a dolphin ice sculpture, dolphin "bride and groom" cake topper, and blue balloon sculptures ("bubbles"). I didn't know it could get much better than that!

  5. Hmmmm, I'm wondering if seafood at a whale-themed wedding might actually be, well, not such a good idea? But, of course Meican makes perfect sense.

Hope you have a "whale" of a great time at the wedding!

  9. Well, if it were a SHARK themed wedding, seafood would be appropriate....as sharks eat an abundance of fish.....and I'm sure there are whales in the ocean all around Mexico....do they wear sombreros?

If I happen to dream of the whale from Free Willy doing the macarena, I will blame you.

  12. Its a combo I had never thought of - mexican whales. I wonder what sort of music she will play to dance to at the reception?

My sister in law's dolphin tattoo apparently turns into a whale each time she falls pregnant......

Keiko the Killer Whale was the whale in Free Willy. The aquarium was located in Mexico. It seems whales and Mexican food are already closely associated, at least since the film.

  18. I've got nothing. Just wow! Whale wedding trends and gassy guests? My daughter in only 10, but I am already thinking of the gads of possibilities. Perhaps hippos with kimchee...

    Wow.

  20. Your blog cannot make me laugh any harder. And I have never seen a fatter whale than that beluga. Is she pregnant? If so, a PREGNANT whale theme would be ever better than a regular whale theme. Just sayin'.

  22. Okay a whale wedding? I am drawing a blank onto what all you could do with whales for a wedding. You will have to take a lot of pictures

  23. Vintage frocks, whale decor and mexican menu? No offense or anything but this wedding sounds a little scitzo.

Should be great fun! And I'm not being sarcastic.
