Go Butler!

We love basketball at our house. We love one college team in particular so much that we named our youngest son after the school's basketball stadium:

I am so not kidding.

Despite my family's fierce loyalty to Duke University, the Blue Devils don't make it to the NCAA championship game in any of my children's brackets. The crowd favorite to win it all in this year's big dance is none other than the Butler University Bulldogs.
"That college has the word 'butt' in it," squealed Cortlen as he choked on his dinner.

The mere allusion to a rump of any sort sent the other two into a fit of hysterics.

"You guys are hilarious," my husband said flatly.
"You're one step away from being excused from this betting pool," I added.

We should have saved our breath; none of the Bulldog fans heard us. They were too busy scrawling "I love Buttler" on scrap paper in the playroom.

My husband and I were disheartened over the fact that our children jumped ship so quickly, and over something as silly as an abstract allusion to a universal body part.

Sadly (for my offspring at least), Butler lost in the first round to LSU by four points. Now that my kids have fallen this far, it wouldn't surprise me if they dropped out of school, starting doing drugs, and began cheering for UNC.

The cliff is that steep.

Happy first day of Spring! It's practically sunbathing weather at my house. Wish you were here!

I know what you mean. We had to talk our 6 y.o. off the ledge when Bama lost to Florida in the SEC Championship game.

Fortunately, he couldn't reach the drugs.

It's 27 degrees here in Ohio--I'm hearin' ya.

My LSU friends are happy anyway. Even though I don't follow basketball, I have to be loyal and say "Go Bucks!"

You guys just have a skiff of sonw on the ground...here we still have piles of frozen mountains on our lawns and along the driveway, two and 3 feet tall! But north Idaho still is the most beautiful place on earth!
I don't follow basketball, but I have a nephew named Cameron...
Love the post!

I am the only basketball fan in my house. I only watch college basketball...okay ACC basketball...really only Duke. I am ashamed to admit that I have not chosen Duke to win it all in either of my brackets, although in one I did hold out hope they'd make it far enough to get another chance at UNC (and even win).

I make no secret of the fact that I expect my kids to go to college and pay for most of it themselves or get scholarships, but I have been known to tell the youngest that if she goes to Duke, I'll pay...so long as she sleeps outside the stadium all week if that's what it takes to get me tickets to a game.

Jana - As a UConn Huskie fan, I'm slightly sad to hear that one of my favorite bloggers is a Duke fan. But then, I dug deep. I remembered Christian Laettner, and remembered back to my Jr & Sr year in highschool when I was madly in love with him and, oh so quickly, I forgot that we are rivals! I suppose I can continue to turn to you (on a daily basis) for my morning belly laugh and perspective check! =)

Thanks for making my day BUTT-er !!

Oh, you made my day! I just discovered your blog last Friday when you 'traded spaces' with cjane. I'm a glorified lurker but had to come out of hiding for this one. I am a graduate of Butler and love, love, love this basketball team! Keep them on your radar for the next three years because with no seniors and 3freshmen starters this year they'll be back! Anyway, you have not created a very dedicated reader out of me (I probably would have been anyway but the shout out to my beloved alma mater solidified it)! Thanks!

Ooops, I meant you have NOW created a very dedicated reader out of me! : )

Sorry about your loss. I did not have faith in Butler against LSU,but if it makes you feel any better, I also did not have faith in my own alum against Texas Tech. That's because BYU is consistent in failing to deliver when it counts, in fact, I can count on them to do that every time. My bracket is all the better for it. Actually, my bracket is currently amazing. Its too bad I don't gamble, I'd win.

You say Singler, I say Hansbrough. We'll see who's really superior.

When I first met my husband, he was a Duke fan. My parents both went to Carolina and this was near blasphemy. My dad actually took me aside and said, in all seriousness, "He's a Duke fan. Do you know what this could do to our family?"

Well, he has finally come to the dark side. And by dark side, I mean the side of all things good and right in the world. And it was not me that turned him. It was JJ Reddick. He experienced a fierce internal struggle when he began to despise the darling player of the team he had loved for years, but he just couldn't do it any more. And now he's almost as much of a fan of Carolina as the rest of us. And don't be mistaken here -- I think he actually might miss being (blue)devil's advocate, the only evil one in a room full of perfection, but he cannot in good conscience pull for Duke any more.

I think I just called you out!

And, just because I can, here is the breakdown of how I pull for basketball teams:

1. FOR Carolina
2. AGAINST Duke
3. FOR BYU (I did graduate from there, after all)
4. AGAINST any teams from Florida (No good reason here -- I've just never seen a coach I liked, and I think they suffer a little from football reputations)
5. FOR any other ACC team not aforementioned

Thank you for your time. It's probably been grossly wasted, but I had a good time usurping.

I am a faithful silent reader, but I had to comment because our 2.5 year old is also named Cameron, after the Cameron Crazies. (We even have a picture of his Dad graduating from MBA school with three-week-old Cameron in his amrs, just in case he ever plays for Duke and ESPN wants a great angle. :>)

My kids were smart enough to take Duke all the way. They like to eat. :)

Glad to see we aren't the only ones brainwashing our kids in the march madness department. Mine have been raised to know that Roy Williams belongs behind bars for leaving KU in the way that he did. And Tyler Hansborough? What a pansy.

Not into basketball...so can't make any comments on it. Wanna talk hockey???

Sorry, our blood runs BYU blue! Every other team, (according to my 10 year old son) are FAKERS! Lol! At 4' 10" I've never been interested much in basketball....I'm pretty good at Yahtzee though! :)

I find it humorous that your background is more Tarheel blue than Duke blue, but my display settings may be just pro-UNC. lol

It's a balmy 61 in my town today. We all took off our coats, donned sunglasses, and I have seen LOTS of capri pants. It's a college town and all the students are on spring break right now so we'll see how they handle the difference when they return.

I happened onto your blog...my daughter is 6 and she picked Butler because "it has butt in it!"

She also calls Duke...."the Duke." Did the Duke win? It's hilarious.

At least I know other people's kids think anything butt is funny. :)

We live in Durham and my son pulls for Duke but I'm sorry to say, he's picking UNC to go all the way. (Please don't ban me from leaving future comments!)

My daughter has successfully ruined her bracket this year for the same reason. When reading the names to her, she laughed and said, "Hehehe, it sounds like butt." Apparently, she really likes that body part, because she picked them to the final 2. I guess I shouldn't expect much from a four year old, but I was hoping that I might be able to make some money off of her betting skills.

HAHAHAH BUTT! It has BUTT in it!!!

Oh sorry, I'm supposed to be mature and not think BUTT's are funny anymore...

My bracket's totally beating up my husband's bracket! Mwaahahahaha!

Jumping ship is an illness that #1 & #2 are afflicted with. It's yet to happen in the tourney this year, but it happens weekly on Survivor. #1 chooses which ever team is winning the challenge midway and #2 then promptly chooses the opposite team. If #1's team loses he cries while #2 gloats. If #1's team wins he parties and #2 immediately switches over. Where is the loyalty in today's youth?

My DS (age 9) also finds anything with the word "butt" in it highly amusing. I'm sure there are people using even less scientific methods for filling out their brackets. LOL

Oh, and GO TARHEELS! :)

It is a good thing Butte Montana doesn't have a team in there!

Our kids are still undecided between UConn and Duke. We'll see who they love more...

Oh, and if your kids are into the word butt, we have this educational song that cracks my daughter up called "Butts Up" by Banana Slug String Band.

Oh, AND, I found your site through someone anonymously saying you make her laugh til she cries, thought you might like to know!

YAY for Butler basketball! My cousin and sister are both Bulldogs, and my sister's boyfriend is #3 Zach Hahn. (He had that first buzzer-beater against Cleveland State)

Love your blog! It is a momentary sigh of relief in my otherwise crazy kid-filled day. ;)

Just found your blog today and am cracking up at your kids picking Butler in their bracket. Another Butler alum here who will be reading your blog faithfully from now on.
