The Missing Cat's Funeral Feast

I'm a big fan of traditional marriage, but I have to admit that my own is somewhat unconventional. For the past eight years, I have been sharing a bed with my husband and his hairy girlfriend.

Sometime last Sunday afternoon, our indoor cat left us. She slipped quietly outside, we presumed, through a door left slightly ajar by one of our children.

Our family spent the rest of the day canvassing the neighborhood, shaking small Tupperware containers filled with dry cat chow while calling our cat's name and peering under our neighbors' decks with flashlights without their permission.

Despite their concern for the family pet, our children were full of optimism.

"Our cat is dead!" wailed Camber.
"A grizzly bear ripped her to shreds!" helped Kellen.
"Pretty soon, vultures are going to peck out her eyeballs," added Cortlen.

Although my kids' imaginings were not quite the image of my pet that I wanted in my head, after 30 long hours had passed, I was forced to admit that they were probably right, and began planning the funeral luncheon.

After buying a ham and retrieving a bag of prepackaged dinner rolls from the freezer, my kids and I set about the task of making a cake.

To my great sorrow, I was out of boxed cake mixes. As I groped my way to the dining room and my antique baker's cupboard (where I keep my cookbooks), I lamented the loss of my pet, and my self-worth. Losing a pet is sad; making food from scratch is demoralizing.

My attitude instantly improved, however, when I opened the cupboard door and my cat jumped out. I have no idea how she got in there or why she didn't make her presence known (she was as quiet as a mouse), but I am happy that we found her, and grateful that we did so before I was forced to get out my measuring cups.

"The funeral feast is on hold!" I announced, holding up the cat.

Everyone cheered, except for Camber, who was hungry. Her appetite was abated, however, by a snack, a quick trip to the grocery store, and the promise of a dessert produced from the contents of a clear plastic pouch.

Have you ever lost a pet in your own house?
Do you have a pet that your husband/significant other likes better than you?
My husband pretends not to hear me when I ask him which of us he would save from a burning building.

I am on the other end of the spectrum, if my husband posed the same question to me, I would also pretend not to hear him.

I can easily say that I'd run out in front of a car to keep my cat from being hit...who I'd save from a burning building is a bit harder.

i suspect the only person my husband will be interested in saving, should there be a fire, is himself. LOL.

When I was a kid we got a puppy. She was really small-- as a grown dog she weighed, ideally, like 10 pounds. Anyway, my parents had made this cozy little next for our new puppy in a box in the dining room. My Dad came downstairs the next morning and the dog was missing. He searched all through the downstairs looking for the puppy-- couldn't find her anywhere. She wasn't answering to her name but since we had just given her her name ten hours earlier that's probably not a huge surprise. My dad was afraid she had fallen down our steep basement stairs into the dungeon, but she wasn't there either. Finally, a few hours later, she emerged from behind the couch where my mom used to keep a stack of afghans. Apparently the one blanket in her box was not enough for her little 3-pound puppy self; she had made herself a nest in the middle of all those blankets and dreamed the night away.

I'm pretty sure my husband likes me better than our current dog. At least, he never makes me sleep in a doggie bed on the couch. But that might just be because he's scared of me and our dog is a lot of things but none of them are scary. LOL.

My husband definitely married me for my cat, Matisse. Even before we had our son, we said we could never divorce because the kitty custody battle would be too gut wrenching.

I have to agree with Viv's comment except we have a dog not a cat. This dog loves and adores me and kind of ticks my husband off just a little bit with his undying devotion to me :)

I'm glad you found your cat!

I know my husband likes me better than our dog because he hardly ever use the "f" word when referring to me but when referring to the dog...

ps - we've had the dog for over a year now and he still is not housetrained! "F" word totally justified!

We love our 3 cats, but hubby diffinetly has a favorite. My favorite varies from time to time, depending which one stays out of trouble. But I do have one that sucks his toes and so I love him maybe a little more.

Our cats love the closet. Or also getting behind any closed door (we have a few of those.) We went out of town for the weekend last year and when we came home I noticed Zipper in a window of a closed room. Still not sure how he and Missy got locked in there.

Ha! Yes we lost our new puppy, thought sure she got out. Scoured the neighborhood with treats. Found her in the basement in one of the kids' pop-up indoor tents, sound asleep in their blankets.

We lost our new kitten when he crawled under our twin size pull out couch and stayed there all day. We even lifted up the couch skirt and looked under it. It took pulling the bed out in order to find him.
My dh enjoys the cats well enough, but I think he would be afraid I would sacrifice him and force him to go and find the kitties in the burning building.

Too funny! Once my friend and I lost her kitten...until we heard faint mewing from the fridge. We checked under it and behind it to no avail. Finally we opened the door. And there she was...stuck to the syrup bottle clinging to the door!

Great post. Your cat looks just like ours! We had a cat disapear last winter. A few months later another cat (we had three) disappeared. Everyone was soooo sad. Two days later I walked into my living room and there she was sprawled on the living room table. No idea where she'd been. Best bet . .she was locked in someone's garage or shed.

I used to have a cockateil that had roam of the house. His favorite place to hang out was on top of the refrigerator. One evening while we were in the kitchen making dinner we noticed little bird was not talking to us, silence. We searched the house high and low.....to nothing. Things were getting frantic, where did he go??

About an hour or so later it came to me.....he was in the freezer!!!!! He loved to sit on top while it swang open and shut....he must of hopped in.

A week later he laid eggs, we assumed that the freezer incident froze HIM into a girl! hahahahahaha

Awww that must have been so scary! Our guy looks a lot like your kitty, except he has a white belly and paws. We lost him in the house once. We had to turn the water off to fix one of the toilets, and the water shutoff is under the house through a panel in the den. The cat snuck in while the panel was open, and then we shut it. Oops. He was only there for an hour or so though. Now he sits in front of the panel and whines because he knows there's somewhere to go beyond it.

Sigh.

Shortly after we got married my cat went missing for two days. I was devastated! As we were leaving for work two days after the sad disappearance of my kitty my hubby jerked the car to a stop (we hadn't quite left the driveway) and ran to our other car. He opened the door and out jumped my cat! No idea how he got in in the first place, but I was thrilled to have him back.

My kids would gladly take the pooch over me anyday. Hands down. I would love to lose the dog, even for a few days (and he is actually a good dog!!).

In Jr. High I had a pet rat that I lost. Luckily he showed up a few days later in my closet. My mother was not happy.

We lost a cat in the floorboards between the first floor and the basement. She found an access door for piping open and decided to make an adventure for all of us. We were in the middle of moving and I was convinced that she was going to get trapped and die in there! I could hear her meowing for hours, but she just wouldn't come out. We finally had to leave for our new home (about 15 minutes away) and I was devastated. The next day I went back and there she was sitting in front of the front door just waiting for me!

How many places can you lose a cat in your house? I'm here to tell you that if you have a Houdini cat like we do, that number can be astronomical. We have hunted for hours for that cat before, to find him in the closet behind the games on the shelf, under the same shelf, in the son's closet under his clothes, in my son's dresser drawer, in our family closet under the clothes and behind the tool boxes kept there, and just this weekend, a new place - behind the books on the very top book shelf next to the ceiling in my son's room. If his tail hadn't been dangling down between the wall and the shelf, I'd have never have known he was there. He NEVER makes a sound when we're calling him, or bothers to come out. I think he gets a diabolical kick out of the whole thing.
This doesn't include the times he's actually found a way to get out of the house, usually by pushing out a window screen, and once by even breaking the window.
We have also taken a neighbor cat to dinner once because he stowed away in our car and we didn't find him till it was too late to turn around.

One of our cats died last June and my husband is still in mourning. I swear if I died he would get over it alot faster than he has that cat!

We spent a good 15 minutes one night chasing one of our cats around the backyard, wondering the whole time how he had gotten out, only to realize that our cat was sitting in the house watching the whole scene. I have no idea whose cat we were chasing!

I ran over my daughter's cat with my car. The cat did me no favors and waited through 2 months of antibiotics and 2- $80 bags of speciality "sick cat" food before my husband put meout of my misery and had the cat put to sleep... 1 week before Christmas.

Most recently our dog was killed on a busy street. My daughter spend the first week after the dog's death realing from the death of her cat more then 14 months prior. Now she just tells everyone "Copper (the dog) died on Valentine's Day".

Another great post. You slay. Thanks for sharing. I'm glad you found the kitty.
Ironically, Mr. Savant lost a cat in the heating ducts while working on kitchen reno last weekend.
He said after hearing small mewls and calling from room to room he heard an explosive burst from the kitchen as the vent popped off. Out came a filthy cat, relieved to be freed and proud that he'd done a banner job cleaning our ductwork.
We joked about sending him in to work the section between livingroom and bathroom later on this week.
He needs some time off.

I particularly LOVE this story because when I was about 17, we couldn't find our cat for an entire day. Late that night, we heard a LOT of really odd noises coming from the kitchen cupboard where my mom kept her tupperware. We flung open the cupboard door and OUT jumped Tinkerbell! We failed to remember that she was in heat until we found the mess in the cupboard...suddenly the odd noises made sense. If you've ever had a cat in heat, you KNOW what I'm talking about.

SICK.

I personally think my husband would save our dog, Nikita, and then say a quick prayer and come back for me :)

Our hamster has lately become an escape artist. He figured out how to pop his cage door open. The first time, my son found him pretty quickly. We got him put away and I made sure everything was shut tight, I figured the first escape was due to my children not shutting the cage properly. Later that night, I was updating my blog and my husband was playing quitar hero. All of a sudden he shouts, "There's a rat behind you." I jumped pretty high, not so much in fear as in disgust that the interior of my home had attracted it. My husband thought this was hysterical, especially because it was not a rat, but the hamster who had escaped again. Now the door of the cage has additional preventions to prevent future escapes. I added two twist ties to keep the door shut. This also has the added benefit of keeping the three kids out of the cage.

Our dogs constantly get locked into rooms when we go in quickly and then leave. Usually we'll be watching TV hours later and one of us will say "where's that dog?" and only then will we hear the faint whining from behind closed doors! Ha!

I grew up with lots of pets of all varieties, hamsters the main kind with the purpose of my mom letting us breed them and sell them for a profit. I can't tell you how many hamsters escaped to the great tunnel in the house, only recovered 3 out of how many we can't count. We did the same thing with baby rabbits when we moved to the country, only they must have been real hungry or something because they were dreaming of the garden next door and chewed a hole in the floor of the shed and 4 escaped. We recovered 2 and found one shot dead from the neighbor in the garden and the other was MIA forever. Ironically the one that was shot was named Peter Rabbit.
Now I am married and have 3 kids and I am horrified to entertain the thought of letting my kids have a small pet after all I have been through!

Every once in a while our 14 year old cat comes up missing. She is an inside/outside cat. The first time this happened we were so upset and thought she was dead. We finally thought to check the attic and that's where she was. Every time I climb the attic ladder, she follows me up there. Unfortunately, she has the quietest meow, so I never realize she is up there until the next day or so. I have been trying to put her outside every time I climb up there now, but every once in a while I forget.

My family had an old english setter named Cedar. We knew she was getting to that stage that we would go to the backyard and find her passing. My husband went out side, called "CEDAR"....there she lay. He walked up on her, shook her, no response. He thought, today I will have to bury my pet. He reached down and picked her up, and scared her out of her sleep, and scared him too. She lived a couple more years after that.

Especially with my habit of storing anything that can be jammed into our closets in our closets. When I was in college and still lived with my parents, we lost our cat, Bubba, in the house one morning. We searched everywhere inside and outside the house, just like you. My mom and I hopped in our cars and searched up and down the streets of our neighborhood, yelling, "Bubba? Bubba?" out the window. I called in late to work and started to head out the door to make some fliers to put on our neighbor's doors, when my mom found him. Bubba had gotten the handles of a gift bag stuck around his neck, and he was hiding under the bed. Every time he moved, the bag seemed to be following him and it had nearly scared him to death. Poor cat.

What a funny story. My husband and I have our "Puppy Babies." They are our first children and will be a big brother and sister to our baby girl going to be born in July.

They have their own bed, (although they always end up on our bed in the middle of the night) my husband built them a custom dog house complete with dog heater and we are planning on tearing down the old falling apart playground to built them an obsticle course for fun.

When my male lab went in for surgery and had to be confined to bed rest for a month I set up play dates for my female pup with neighbor's dogs. They thought I was crazy, but it was wonderful! She was happy and would come home exhausted and go right to sleep leaving her poor ailing brother alone.

As for a burning building, it's not a question ... we would both go get the dogs ;)

We had a pet hamster when I was in High School. In the summer we would put her out on our deck in the shade. One afternoon I came out to check on her and she was gone! She had pushed her mesh top off somehow with some apparent super-hamster strength. We searched high and low for her - where was there to go on a deck, besides below? Later in the day my Dad was pulling weeds in a flower bed right below the deck where there was also a drainage pipe where the deck's gutter emptied. Lo and behold a little nose poked out of the drain pipe. Must have been one wild rain down the downspout off of the deck! She was fine and lived a full, happy, healthy hamster life after that!

When I was younger, between 9 and 12, I was "famous" in the NE Orem area for finding lost hamstpers andrats and guinea pigs, and such. Word of mouth had me doing a rescue once a week. I later went on to be a volunteer for the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources as a wild animal rehabilitator and trainer for those who could not be released. My all time Fav animal was Lunas, a long earred owl. She was unreleasable due to a severe fracture that never heald so I got to train her and she became an animal liason for educational presentations. She gave kisses, flew to my fist from across the room, "preened my feathers" (hair) and everything. I love animals. If you ever have a lost one or find an injured one feel free to drop me a line. I am so happy that you found your kitty!

Plus, when we actually did go to look at a puppy, my one year old grabbed one by the skin on the back with two hands and heaved, and my other son stepped on a tail. I had to think about the pet, really.

Hilarious story. I have two indoor cats and we do lose them from time to time in the house. However, they usually make it known to us by scratching or crying.

But...recently we moved from Western WA to SE Idaho and the day before we were to leave, one of the cats, Carlos, got out and ran away. We were devastated and stayed in town two extra nights waiting for him to come home. We scoured the neighborhood and took flyers around. Then, we just had to leave. We thought for sure he was dead. He was an indoor cat, out amongst coyotes and racoons. He didn't stand a chance. Well, ten days later I got a call from a former neighbor that Carlos had come home. She trapped him and I jumped in the car the next morning and drove 800 miles like a bat out of hell to get him. 1600 miles round trip to pick up the worlds skinniest cat. Clearly he didn't eat the entire time. It was crazy. But my kids were thrilled to have him back. Man, the things we do...or, I do at least! :)

We have two Shih Tzu puppies. They seem to be able to find places in my house I did not know existed. One day I came home from work and one puppy had no collar on. We searched the house and could not find it. A couple of days later my dogs were fighting under the bed, so I knelt down to yell at them and I couldn't see them...but I did see a bulge in my box springs. I called and one of the dogs came out, but the other one was stuck. I had to do a c-section on my box springs to get her out. When I lifted up the box springs to put a fitted sheet on it so they could not get back in there....out fell the collar.

We have six cats, three of whom were abandoned kittens that we bottle fed and raised last summer. So, we have 3 cats that are the same age and when they were kittens we were always finding them in odd places. Like: inside the closed refrigerator, inside a dresser drawer, locked in the closet, inside the closed cupboards, in closed cardboard boxes, up in the attic (don't ask) and assorted other places. Now that they are bigger, it's easier to find them when they hide somewhere. But, most nights I do a quick head count before going to bed to make sure all six are safe.

Bah, I say, to everyone who lost a petite puss or puppy. I lost 50 WHOLE POUNDS of WEIMARANER, for heaven's sake. FIFTY POUNDS of howling, bouncing, insanely clingy, hypersensitive all-legs dog.

See, at the time, Princess Prissypants slept in her kennel at night, and while I was at work--meaning that most of her non-kennel hours were, well, supervised. Only one night, we get ready to go to bed and--huh?--where's the dog that we normally have to peel off of our faces to be able to see the TV??

Eight hours later--after lots of calling her name ("BAAAD DOG! BAD DOG?"), rattling a food dish, driving down to the park and printing out posters, my husband and I were just getting out of bed to go put up some "Lost Dog" posters.

At which point, Princess Prissypants comes hurtling out from under the bed.

Where she'd been.

For eight hours.

Even with her pea-sized bladder.

Not making a sound.

To this day, I wonder if she was "hiding..." or if, special case that she is, she crawled under the bed and got TOO LOST to find the other side.

How about an "almost" lost dog story? I had decided to move off campus my junior year of college and desperately wanted a dog. Since my parents wouldn't let me take the family dog (which they hated -- so go figure) I told them I wanted a puppy.

They flatly refused.

While I worked that summer, the rest of the family went on vacation, so... one day before heading out to work I decided to drop by the local SPCA just to window shop, as it were.

I was informed that you couldn't take a puppy younger than 6 months old out of the city, so I would have to look at the older dogs. The counselor asked in what breed I was interested. I told her a Golden Retriever. Naturally, they had none in stock. My second choice was a Husky. The woman immediately brightened up and said "I think we have one!" So off we went in search of Houdini the Husky. I call him that because we scoured that place from top to bottom and couldn't find any sign of him. Apparently every time we were indoors, he was in his outdoor run and vice versa.

We finally threw in the towel and since it was a slow day, the woman and I chatted as she walked me to my car. Just then she spotted a particular kennel and said, "I think that's the one he was in." As she said it, he stuck his head out of the door. She called to him excitedly. He looked at her as though she'd lost her tiny little mind. I bent down, crooked a finger at him and said, "Come here."

He ran up and licked me from head to toe.

Sold!

A few days later the rest of the family returned from a lovely vacation, having particulary enjoyed the last leg of the trip where they had a blowout while on the highway and the A/C broke just outside of El Paso. Meaning they had to drive all the way to Houston with no air... in late July.

You can imagine my father's reaction when he poured himself out of the car, walked through the garage door and found a large, somewhat menacing looking strange dog standing in his back yard. I was at work at the time, but fortunately my grandmother happened to be at the house. As Father prepared to toss out the hairy intruder, she ran out and sheepishly said, "No, Tom. He belongs here."

Cut to 10:30 p.m. when I got home. Despite fervent prayers on my part that they would be in bed, The Parents were sitting in wait on the sofa, looking for all the world like Medusa's angry cousins.

"WE TOLD YOU YOU COULDN'T HAVE A DOG!" they bellowed in unison. Fortunately I remembered my mythology class and making certain not to look them directly in the eyes I responded, "You said I couldn't have a puppy. He's two years old."

At that point I realized I had a future in law. My parents, however, were thinking more along the lines of the gas chamber (for me and the dog). After an interminable argument and a presumably somewhat persuasive summation by me, they went to their bedroom to privately discuss how dispose of the about-to-be corpses.

I knew I had to play my ace in the hole at that point, so when Father came back into the den in his black cap and robe to hand down the death sentence I was clutching our elderly, very sick family dog to my chest and sobbing for all I was worth.

He stood there silently. I didin't look up. After a minute or two, he turned wordlessly and went back into the bedroom.

At that point I knew that neither hope nor my dog were lost.

Chalk one up for the defense!

I'v never had a pet - so I've never lost a pet in my house. However, we did once have an uninvited guest of the animal sort. We heard a scraping sound coming from behind the drawer under the stove. We assumed it was a mouse. We spent about 45 minutes cutting cardboard and taping it to the baseboards to create a track-like-thingy that woul make it so the mouse could only run straight to the front door and out, once we opened the drawer. We invited my husband's brother over to help so that I could cower in the corner protecting the baby. They slowly opened the drawer - armed with brooms to help guide the mouse. ...And out flew a bird. Seriously. A bird. Stuck behind our stove. It callously ignored our 2 inch walls and flew all over. It was crazy. Eventually we turned out all the lights and left the front door open and it flew out. Total chaos left in it's wake.

Amazing write up, i completely agree with you. Our pet always becomes a family member and is treated like one of us.
