The T.V. Martyr/ Western Union Father's Day Giveaway!

Father's Day is fast approaching and I am struggling with gift ideas for my husband. What do you get a man who has everything? He already has a 19" inch television set purchased in the early 90s, a broken X-box, and a VCR from the Reagan administration.

My sister, who is visiting us this week, broke the news gently. "That TV is an embarrassment," she said. "I have to squint to see the picture, and I'm only three feet away."

The announcement that the only t.v. in our house is an eye sore (and may cause them as well) was not a news flash. My husband's desire for a larger television, preferably one with remote control, led me to purchase a 32" set for him last year for Christmas. After everyone appropriately praised the purchase, the object sat unopened in our living room for a week before my husband returned it. The guilt of spending so much money on an item that we really didn't need got the best of him.

Over the next few months, I felt increasingly bad about depriving my husband of such an important symbol of masculinity, so I purchased an even larger television for him for his birthday in March. As I dragged the box out of its hiding place in the hall closet, my husband's emotions of surprise and excitement quickly gave way to feelings of unworthiness and frugality. My husband politely declined the gift and I returned the television the next day.

"You know, at some point, Tim might actually decide to keep one of the televisions that you buy him," my sister reminded me last night. We were in the home theater section of the electronics store, where I was picking out my husband's Father's Day gift.

I threw back my head and laughed. "Impossible!" I replied. Owning a new t.v. for more than twenty-four hours (and actually removing said television from its original packaging) would elevate my husband out of martyrdom, and he likes feeling persecuted way too much to make that sacrifice.

FATHER'S DAY GIVEAWAY!

I'm very excited to be joining forces with Western Union to give the martyr in your life an awesome gift this Father's Day.

Western Union is giving one lucky winner $100 CASH!
No hidden fees, obligations, or commitments. Your winnings will be transferred to the Western Union agency of your choice (chances are, the closest one is your grocery store!).

Western Union makes it easy to send and receive money to loved ones with over 300,000 agent locations worldwide (44,000 in the U.S. alone). In this current economy, providing some extra cash may be one of the easiest--and in many cases, most appreciated--things you can do this Father's Day.

Did you know that Western Union isn't just for transferring money overseas? I've used Western Union to send money to relatives living in Spain, Mexico, and Brazil, but my dad sent money to me when I was in college and I lost my wallet in the middle of the Nevada desert (don't ask) and I needed money for gas. Western Union can send money in minutes, the next day, or directly to a bank account, either online or over the phone. Use cash, credit, or debit cards.

In addition to their money transfer services, Western Union makes it easy to pay bills, make purchases, and manage your budget with bill payment services and convenient money orders. Who knew?

To enter this special giveaway, all you need to do is leave a comment that includes your "best" (interpret this however you see fit) Father's Day Gift idea.

Contest starts NOW and ends THIS FRIDAY, June 12th at midnight EST. The lucky winner will be announced the next day. Want an extra chance to win? Post a link to this contest on your blog and leave a second comment!

GOOD LUCK!

Since we are under a strict budget, I'm gonna go with not asking my hubby to change any diapers for a whole week. He's a trooper and changes our toddler and baby when they need a changing. I think poo free for a week would be a nice gift. Right?

If I get the $100, I could go ahead him an ipod... he can listen to it while he changes those poopy diapers :-) Beth in NC

I would have to say my husband will be getting a pair of sneakers this year, All he does is complain about how many pairs I have and that I don't even wear them. I'm a sandals kinda gal:)

Hm. Easy. A positive pregnancy test. Or, if you've seen a few too many of those, have a pregnant friend pee on a pregnancy test and then have one of your small children give it to him. Watch the color drain from his face. Tell him it was a joke, and happy father's day. Watch the color return to his face, followed by a big grin. You've made his day.

His best fathers day gift was on his first father's day. Our twins came home from the NICU and we spent all day at home with them!

Oh and Walmart (here atleast) is having an AWESOME sale on Flat Panels...like $400 off. We're getting one I think...46" for like $600 was the one my hubby saw.

my sister and i thought it was funny one year to get a quirky, stereotype-father's-day tie for my dad for father's day. then, we thought it was funny to do it again the next year... and the next year... to this day, we still think it's hilarious. i'm not sure he ever got into the joke as much as we did!

The best Father's Day present would have to be a full day uninteruppted to watch "guy" shows on the aforementioned small TV! I have promised this year to not complain about any golf, car, or fixing shows! $100 would go to saving up for a not so small TV!

My best father's day idea, as like your husband mine has everything, would be to hire your husband a handy-man for a day or specific chore, so he will be given the gift of time and have something done for him. It's all I got... running out of ideas.... :)

The best gift for my hubby would be a set of timbales. That sounds a lot more graphic than it actually is. Timbales are the drums that he needs to complete a pro drum audition in order to get a job. They're about $185 for a set, so $100 would get us over half way there. And the job, well, it would be nice to get that too.

Ooh a contest, what fun! We won't be doing "gifts" this year...we have four boys ages 7 and under and a new baby due in August (no we didn't find out the sex!) Hubby & I decided in April to not spend frivolous money for 24 mos and save for a house instead. So he would be mightily surprised with $100!

My hubby sounds like yours. He is in desperate need of a new bike, but there is no way he'd spend that much money. Maybe $100 would help??

My hubby would LOVE 100 bucks, guilt-free, no strings attached, to spend however HE likes!

We just got a 36 inch TV for $85 through craigslist. You just have to get an older TV from someone who doesn't feel guilt when they upgrade. Of course, it is 27 inches thick, which reduces our viewing distance somewhat, but no headaches to report yet.
P.S. Our other TV was 25 years old when it began arcing blue lightning out the back. That considerably reduced our guilt about getting a newer one.

I am going for the best double decker Fathers Day Gift. Two years ago my father-in-law moved from Missouri (where we are) to Navada. My hubby counts his dad as his best friend so for his gift we are going to take a trip to Nevada. This way we get to gift not only my hubby, but also his daddy too! timmysmom1298@yahoo.com

Our tv is just about as bad as yours but my husband would gladly accept a tv as a gift if I approved it. No martyr here. You're lucky to have such a frugal husband! I think he deserves a new tie for Father's day. Preferably one made by your children. Makes me think of your fabric covered easter egg craft. I would love to see a post of your homemade tie!

I'd love to give my amazing father $100 for father's day, unfortunately I am not creative in gifts. His birthday is near father's day, so every year that I lived at home I made him a giant oatmeal raisin cookie (his favorite) that said, "happy birthday/father's day."
Yeah, see, he deserves $100 in cash. Especially since I'm moving to Vermont for law school and he feels he will never see me again once that happens. (I am his favorite so this truly does make him sad.)

My son thinks the best gift for his dad are video games that can be played on the Wii. Um, too bad they seem more like a gift for the former than the latter. His newest idea is a candy gram, maybe he will leave some of the candy in the wrappers...

aside from the $100 (which my sweet husband would probably give to me so that i could get my hair done--self esteem is vital during pregnancy and all and money is very tight), he would love me to bake him snickerdoodles and get some good lovin'...he loves things that take energy, not money. (i'd almost prefer the things that take money!)

My husband's ideal gift would be for me to give him permission to stay home from church and watch old Seinfeld episodes all day...either that or what Melissa said. "Sex with shaved legs (mine not his)." That has got to be the funniest thing I've heard all day! If you don't pick me, you should pick her...but only if you don't pick me!

Well, I know my dad's favorite Father's Day is the martyr thing too... so the best thing is if I can get him to help me with a project on my house on Father's Day! He loves to joke/complain about how it's backwards. And there's never really anything he wants/needs in the way of gifts anyway.

The best father's day gift for my hubby will be this year's gift. I'm giving him a framed picture of he and my son walking hand in hand away from the camera. Sun block. It's weird but so is the fact that my dad, a 55 year old man, recently got a tattoo of a turtle on his calf. He's burly, he's my superhero, and he has a finding nemo-esque tattoo on his leg. Sun block keeps it bright and he obsessively puts it on his tat, but nowhere else. My dad is all class and I think a year's supply of sunblock would make him a very happy dude!

Really, not the most amazing gift but I actually surprised him and he was really excited. Nothing better! I hope to make this one another memorable one for him! He is pretty awesome!

Seriously...I can't believe how few comments there are on what I understood to be almost every man's "best" gift...ahem... especially in these economic times. It would definitely involve reminding him how he came to be a father in the first place, perhaps a silky little number from my gal Victoria and with a bonus 100 bucks tucked in there somewhere...WATCH OUT!

For my own dad, it would probably be something like a private preview of all the stuff that comes into Goodwill. The thrill of a good deal with out the competition. Thanks for the giveaway and endless entertainment.

that is sooooo funny! the pix of the TV is the same one I bought when my husband was deployed to Iraq 5 years ago. Our TV broke and I felt so guitly about buying a new one I bought the cheapest one at Best Buy. Still works though. Just a hint, check Craigslist and the local paper. So many people are "UPGRADING" from their old tv's (2 - 3 years old) that they are practically giving their old ones away. We got a 38 inch HDTV for a few bucks at a garage sale b/c the man of the house got a new 52 in plasma!!! Just a thought!~!

For Father's Day my husband really wants and needs an electric drill, new weed whacker/edger (are those the same thing?) and a new grill. So I guess he has reason to complain about his lot, as he'll end up with a polo and tie and dinner out at my favorite establishment.

I'd love to give my husband a window. He works from home full-time, which means he is available to help with our three kids (including our 2 year old daughter who we adopted from China in January). He also puts up with a lot of noise in the house, with just the sound of the dryer or a/c unit to provide a buffer during phone calls. His office is a tiny 8 x 9 space that used to be part of the laundry room. He faces the fuse boxes all day long, every day. I would love for him to have a window so he could see our beautiful backyard, our kids having fun, and me giving him the stink-eye when he is working late and I'm ready to run screaming from our kids and the backyard!

Since the Jeep is 30 years old he'll need all the money he can get to restore it, 'cause God knows we don't have any $ left!!

Well this would be the best gift for my husband. First it's cash from someone else. Second I am positive he will make sure that it goes to a bill or food or diapers. Something that can't be mistaken as his. Third I know his true gift will be telling all his friends how he won $100 cash and I wouldn't even let him use it on himself!

The best gift for my husband is just a picture of the kids on his desk at work to remind him of why he works so hard. I have four children under the age of 5, and getting them all to cooperate and look at the camera is torture for me and them. Then I let them decorate, or make a frame to put it in. The thing is tacky as all get out, but my husband proudly displays it on his desk at work for all to see.

Well, my FIL always says the best present he ever got for father's day was my husband! But because he was born on Father's day his birthday is always within a couple of days of Father's Day. This year his combined b-day/father's day is a $650 watch to replace the one he has had for 15 years that finally broke.

My husband is the best father ever! He is a teacher, coaches 2 varsity sports and is blessed with 2 "daddy's girls." (and NO, we are not going to continue having children until we have a boy!!!). He spends most of his "off" time working around the house or playing softball, basketball or swimming with the girls. He loves them with all his heart and very deserving of $100! Pick him to win!

Isn't the joy of being a father on father's day enough? The gift of feeding, bathing, changing, etc. two precious little children is all a guy could ask for (took us 9 years and 4 IVF attempts). But, if you are talking about a tangible gift, this year I am excited. He doesn't have a baby book of himself -- pictures, information about birth, etc., so I put one together. Scanned some old photos hidden in a shoebox, talked to family, and now waiting for the album to arrive in the mail. Oh, and the $100 would be a great bonus! He may like that a little more than the other two gifts I mentioned.

Father's day, I think being married to me and bearing his child, literally bearing his child, (still not potty trained at 4!), is gift enoughh.

Shay is awesome, he let me have a fifth kid after having twin girls for #3 & 4. Since you have twins I think you can understand how wonderful that makes him. The best gift would be a deep sea fishing trip.

I think a great Father's Day gift would be a day for dad with ALL the kids. Ha!

My husband won't be a father for another few months, but I think if he got a present, it would help him feel more ready for the prospect.

Kristy said...

I think my hubbys idea of the best Fathers day gift would be to have the day off! He's working all month long, and if he had the day off, I could leave him to spend some time with the kids!
Of course, I'd be shopping for his real gift, lol!

Fathers Day is an odd day. So, is Mother's Day.

There is so much irony in the fact that we are to be celebrating this divine role. But in fact we are to treat the Father or the Mother as though they have no duties.

Mother shouldn't have to lift a finger and Father doesn't have to do a blasted thing with the children.

So, I guess in this crazy ironic world, it is still the "Best" gift to be alleviated from any Fatherly duties and not have to 'father' that day.

My husband likes to shop; gifts are okay and short lived for him. Give him a gift card or some cash and he will spend hours browsing deals online or reading customer reviews on the gadget d'jour! He loves it.

The best father's day gift for my hubby would be lots of new parts for his old (1969) car and the time to work on the thing ;-)

Here's an idea, since your husband doesn't like spending a HUGE amount of $$ at once, give him gift cards toward the TV for each holiday, B-Day etc....that way when he has enough, it's not such a shock. And it's paid for...plus he can't return a gift cards:<)

My husband got me half dead Walmart flowers for Mother's day. I decided that the best revenge would be to get him something really great for Father's day. $100 would go a long way towards my revenge. I haven't yet decided what that will be, but it will be good.

My honey is a runner. Not just a runner but like a Runner. He does long distances. He did a 41 miler last spring, did a 31 this past fall would have done another 40+ mile run this spring except that he pick up some sort of infection and landed himself in the hospital. Anyway, back to the point...the best gift for him would be running stuff. Because although it looks like it would be a cheap sport it's not. And maybe some more time to run. Yeah, that sounds good.

Marie said...

My husband (father to 5) would e best Father's Day gift was the family size hammock about 4 years ago. This year it's a replacement hammock, the ropes frayed on the old one.

The first 4 years of our marriage our living room tv (only one we had) was his nine inch color one from growing up. It was on top of the VCR, on top of my teenager Stereo, on top of an end table. I invited my best friend over to watch Titanic when it first came out on video, she walked in the living room and laughed! Not so great on a 9 inch screen!!!

christine said...

My second entry, your blog has been listed on my blog. That button is really cool.

Also, second reason he'll need running more running stuff as a Father's Day gift. He's starting a Pediatric Residency this summer and he'll need to run off the stress.

This might actually help my husband get something in time... we were late on sending his Father's Day Care package (containing a Chuck Norris t-shirt, cookies, and SpongeBob card) so he'll probably get it more like July 4th. And his navy ship will be in port on June 16th (can't tell you where or I'll have to kill you), so he can treat himself to some local cuisine and get his clothes laundered.

The best gift for my hubby would be to come home (He is in Iraq for the 4th time), but that's not going to happen right now, so I think he would probably get to do an online shopping spree at Best Buy.com. He would be in heaven. lol! I know he loves that I film every tantrum our kids throw, and send him pictures of everything they break, but I think he might enjoy some new movies, games or CD's too.

I was at Old Navy today and they are having the "Men's Better-Half off" sale, so I found lots of clothes that he totally needs & would look good on him, BUT the "best" gift (in his opinion) actually requires NO CLOTHES AT ALL...and me - but "you'll have to interpret THAT however you see fit!" ;)

Alright, so I realize that this is a long shot but I'll go for it anyhow. The best gift my wonderful hubby and baby's daddy could receive would be the gift of some financial security. He's working and going to school all just to help our little family. $100 likely won't pay off his massive student loans but every bit helps! He would be ever-so-grateful as I am for all he does!

Ahhhh, THE BEST Fathers Day Gift Idea for my husband - My husband is very big into reptiles! (nah, he is not one of those freaks with elevator shoe, eyeliner and chains - just has that 13 year old boy excitement whenever he catches a gecko or a snake) Really, my hubby is normal, except we have snakes and geckos. lol. BUT, being poor starving college students, its hard to find time, (or money) to support the gas cost for him to go snake hunting! Right now he is working on trying to document every reptile in AZ before graduate school. I really want him to succeed and $100 would make his dreams come true to be able to go out on the weekend and camp without a naggy wife!

One year for mother's day, much to my dislike, my husband bought me two hamsters, Who then had tons of babies. (which was a bonus gift, I suppose...)
I think this year I might need to get him an animal that is of equal, if not more, significance than the hamsters of Mother's day past: A family of Cockatoos. I'm sure he'll enjoy that as much as I did my hamsters.

The best Father's Day gift for my husband would involve spending absolutely no money at all, a good home-cooked dinner, an afternoon playing with our son, and, well, a little time of fellowship with his wife later on. :) My husband is, praise the Lord!, a faithful steward of the money God blesses us with. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't be in the financial situation necessary to build a house right now. He hardly EVER spends money; he rarely even goes out to lunch. He almost always takes leftovers to work. (He is a fireman.) It would be so awesome to be able to present that money to him and say, "Honey, go do something for yourself for a change! You deserve it!"

My hubby is definitely that same martyr but only verbally. He'll SAY "No, no, you really don't have to do that. This is too much. you do too much for me" and then accept the gift. Is there such a thing as a false martyr?

Anyway, I want in. It'd be great for him to win something like that since he didn't do a bloody thing for me for Mother's Day...nada...nothing. So I'm all about, you know, kill em' with kindness ;-)

The best gift I can think of for my former macho, football playing, sports loving guy, who gave that all up for a boring, frugal, but busy life as dad to triplet girls, would be $100 that he has to spend ON HIMSELF! Perhaps he will decide to splurge and replace his hole filled socks!

One of the best gifts I think would be a "spa day" So I would get him a gift certificate to get a massage. This is what I'm doing for my hubby for his 1ST FATHER'S DAY!

I think our best gifts have been the ones that have barely cost anything but are from the heart. When our oldest was 1 1/2, I made him a book with pictures of her doing her favorite things and we started it saying, "Daddy, I love you more than..." We made it for his office, which actually never saw the book within it's four walls...he left it at home and she (the oldest child) has since nearly destroyed it. Then there was the time the year before (when she was only 6 months old) that I took an older, but decent, tie and painted the baby's hands and put handprints on the tie with the words "I love you, Daddy." He was less than thrilled at the idea of wearing said tie, wore it on Father's Day to church and it has been in the back of his closet since. Please let me win this prize so he can be happy with a Father's Day gift! He's a great husband and father, but he wants something really GOOD for a gift. He deserves it for all he does for us.

Thank you I would love to win! I think my hubby would LOVE to get a 2007 Harley Davidson Road Glide this year... but it isn't going to happen just yet! lol I think he would say that best Father's day present was the year that I had the kids decorate a special jar and then they took note paper and wrote fun memories they had of their dad - one per note paper. So when dad feels down all he needs to do is go to the jar, open it up and pull out a note or two to cheer him up! :)

My husband's father passed away three years ago and my husband did not get much to remember him by. I want to make my husband a memory book about his father this father's day and let my children write their memories of grandpa inside as well. When his dad died the children couldn't afford a vase for the headstone...we can get one added for $100. I think that and the memory book would make a very memorable and meaningful father's day for my husband.

This is my husband's first year celebrating Father's Day as the father of 5! --all 8 and under! We just adopted 2 toddlers last summer and we are all still adjusting. He is the best daddy EVER! Never tired after work, playing with them all till bedtime, helping me with dinner and the laundry, cleaning up the kitchen at night, and, if you can believe it, he gives me a massage EVERY night!

His dream trip would be to go build houses for the poor in South America or some other philanthropic endeavor, but since that won't be feasible for some time, $100 would be a very fun and welcome surprise!

Husband's best gift wish: a new road bike

but i don't think that has a lot to do with Father's day, so i am making him a framed scrap page with father/son pictures. I will also let him watch his child and wife for a whole Saturday's worth of pre-planned activities (zoo, and a trip to our favorite bakery). It will be fun!

This year my husband is getting George Strait concert tickets for Fathers Day! It's not selfish of me to give him a gift that entails taking me out to dinner and then the concert is it? Please tell me it isn't. But just in case it is... I could really use the $100 to give him as a back up.

Although I'd like to give my dear husband a big fat nothing for Father's Day, just like he gave me for Mother's Day, I'm not that evil. The "best" gift my children could give him is some peace and quiet coupled with complete control of the remote. Since that's not going to happen, I figure a "Because I said so!" plaque and a "Always Daddy's Little Girl" snowglobe will have to do. :)

Wow! What a great prize! My husband is a one-man construction company who busts his butt every day to ensure his work is above and beyond all others. When he comes home, he practically crawls to the shower and then tries to relax in a much-too-small arm chair, with a much-too-worn ottoman. If I could swing it, and I am trying really hard, I'd get him an ultra-comfortable recliner to kick back in. Maybe then, he'd be able to enjoy the little time he has to spend with his three children.
