Cup Holders

The inside of my car hasn't smelled right for a week or so.

This morning, I followed my nose to the third row cup holder, where I found this:

After poking the two largest objects with a stick, my husband determined that they were the semi-liquid remains of a fresh pear.

"This is disgusting," I told the person who sits in the seat next to the cup holder.

The person responded by asking with hopeful anticipation if the pear was still edible.

Makes you curious about what tasty treats are hiding in YOUR cup holders doesn't it?

Happy New Years!

Every mini-van has that lurking in the cup holders! My kids love what they find when they clean out the van.

I have four daughters (20, 18, 3, 1) and one mini-van. I picked up my sister and her two boys (9 & 10) from the airport and on the way home one of them pulls a tampon (in the wrapper of course) from the 3rd row cupholder. "What's this?" Everyone turns three shades of red except my oldest who says "It's a tampon, it's a girl thing". Oh. My. Goodness. Those cupholders!

Cup Holders are a Blessing and a Curse.

Oh, goodness. I picked up a friend to take her somewhere and then when I sat in the passenger seat later that day, I realized that, not the cup holder, but the space in the door where you put your hand to close it, is filled with my daughter's used tissues. Disgusting. Yuck. Mortifying. No more teenagers in the front seat, I guess.

I drive a German car and the cupholders are a complete joke. In fact the guy at the dealership told me the Germans only installed them for the Americans. Never have I been so grateful for crappy cupholders that just clip around the cup until this very moment!

I find left over pieces of food in my third row cup holder too. You name, she has put it in the cup holder

We had a half eaten banana once.

The third row is always a scary place. Honestly you just never know what you will find back there!

My most favorite thing to clean out was a cheese quesadilla. In the summer. Yay greasy cheese residue!

the worst is the sippy cups with a little bit of milk left in it. Sometimes they roll under the seat in the van or are hidden at the bottom of the toy box. yuck!

Actually no. I'm the psychotic mom who does a full car search when food has been in my car. Yep-do this from experience. Sounds like you may be doing the same very soon?!?!! ;)

I do this every time I get in my daughter's car...search under the seats, in the seats, between the seats, in the cupholders, in the console, etc. There is ALWAYS an odor and it is ALWAYS emanating from one of those areas. My own car? Not so much anymore. By the time I got to the fourth kid I had learned a few things. ;)

This isn't an issue for me, as my daughter is only 14 mos old. But I remember my own mother chastising my brother and me for leaving trash and especially half-eaten lollipops in the cup holds of her car. Oh, the memories.

Funny - I too find numerous scientific discoveries in my cup holders...lol

We had our own treat found in our door by my youngest's car seat- took us about 2 weeks to find it- but fortunately it didn't smell. http://www.singingandspinning.com/2008/11/one-way-to-know-that-you-have-2-year.html

Planning ahead I bought my 4, 5, 9, and 10 year olds their own packs of gum for a 16 hour car trip. Little did I know that the 4 year old would chew up her pack of gum and then put the used pieces in her cup holder. It was discovered after the trip when we were back in 115 degree heat of the AZ summer. Gum, heat, and 4 year olds don't do well together.

Oh my! The smelliest thing to grace my car was a sippy cup that had the lid off half way. It was filled with congealed milk.

LOL!!! That is really gross - but equally as funny!

our car has smelt like a giant fart for the past week until I dug out french fries from under their car seats. I think a half eaten chicken nugget was hiding there too. and a ton of chips and crackers half shriveled up carrots and apples. my husband says no more snacks in the car but that is so not going to happen. with our schedule I guess I will just have to clean out the van more often. yeah, one more thing on the list.

Not a cup holder story, but... I took my SIL and darling niece to the mall one day. When day was done and I dropped them at home she said "hmmm. Must have lost the bottle at the mall. Oh, well."

Thought nothing of it until several days later when I got in my car and was immediately assaulted by a horrible, rank, disgusting, violent smell. Unbelievably, terribly, nauseatingly bad. Guess who had dropped her bottle of GOAT'S MILK on the floor of the car where it proceeded to leak for two days into the carpet under the driver's seat? Ever smell rotten goat's milk? Ummm... don't! That car was never the same.

(This is the same SIL who let her baby toddle around the house with a bottle of prune juice, trailing drips everywhere. Thirty years later you can still see the faint stains on our Oriental rug. Gotta love her!)

After reading your post, I was compelled to do a "cup check". We have two small SUV's and one of them is impeccably maintained (which means that it gets vacuumed once a year and washed when it rains). This is the most common mode of transport for our 8 month old. Fortunately, he only eats strained baby food at this point, so there are no unidentified objects in the cup holders.

I wish the same could be said for car number 2. Poor "old gray" hasn't been driven in a while. He's a good car, but he has a lot of miles on him, so he's usually safely stabled in the garage as a back-up. Upon inspection of all cup holders I inventoried the following:

4 restaurant peppermints from Sonic. We were there last October.

2 sticky, crusty soft drink "rings" probably the result of 1 Diet Dr. Pepper & 1 Lemon Slush.

2 pennies which about sums up how much cash I have.

And the crowning jewel, the prize find, the golden ticket: a dog biscuit.

We don't have a dog....

Please, please ask me what I have in the center console.

Oh yes, I've found many a funk in the cupholders in the backseat. And I too recently traced a curious odor to an apple that had been left in the car for a week. Ewww!

Don't you know all that crap in your cup holders and on the floor of the car is what will keep you alive if you get stranded! We will be living off goldfish (hundreds of them) and the occasional stray french fry as a tasty dessert! At least you have something healthy stored!

I always steered clear of the third row cup holders. I would just press the button to open the windows back there and hope that would make the smell go away.

I once found the liquified remains of a banana. The stench had been filterd by a towel covering it. It was disgusting!

Oh we have these stories too....kids are cute but oh so gross!! :D

So far our cupholders only hold my son's rock collection- precious gravel found in parking lots.

Audra said...

No cup holders in our back seat but my two-year-old will pick up and eat any and all dropped food in her car seat. Stale cereal and frozen fruit snacks kept her entertained today!

Emmy said...

Oh nasty! Glad you were able to find it and get rid of it.

This would be exactly why my son dosen't eat or drink in the car.

Peaches left under the bead are also terrible- my sympathies.

You've heard it before. It could be worse. And has been.

Our car smelled horribly, keeing the windows down 24/7 did nothing to help the smell. I then moved the booster seat to see something leaking out of the cup holder that was closed into the seat. With closer inspection I found left over dill seasoned sunflowers seads mixed with water. Not a combination to have in the summer months.

Cup holders, what you will find in them indeed. I know we don't find any dried up pears but we do find sticky change. We always use our cup holder for change and a spot to put our McDonalds soft drink.

Word of caution don't leave your cups in their too long. The pop will leak out your cup and you will have sticky money, lol

Yes our change is all sticky! What a mess. We learned from that now,lol

Oh thank god! I thought I was the only mom who didn't clean her mini-van on a regular basis and was greeted by unidentifiable objects in her cupholders (and also the trunk, as my oldest son has a habit of tossing his food behind him when he's finished with it). I've stopped giving them fruit after I once found a banana rotting away. Now I find left over chicken nuggets, cereal and trail mix.
