The Pull Toy

Some people buy their children pull toys.

Those who don't discover a new use for their electric mixers.

*****
What's the craziest household item that your child has befriended? Cortlen used to make out with the vacuum cleaner when he was three.

My son uses the toilet plunger as a hat! It's only been used on the kitchen sink so not too big of a deal. Anyways, I hope to break the habit before he starts preschool!

HAHAHA That is hilarious! My 3 year old carries my oven mitts around and calls them his gloves. My almost 2 year old carries around the computer mouse (it's wireless) and pretends it's a cell phone. :)

My nephew is obsessed - literally obsessed - with anything electronic. If it has an on/off switch, it belongs to him. In fact, my mother in law gave him an old iPod or cell phone that wasn't working any more and he somehow got it to work.

My girls constantly steal my whisks for microphones. I always have to dog them out of the dress ups when I need them.

That would be "dig" not dog, it's late, sorry!

A plastic strainer. It becomes a hat, some kind of weird magnifying glass, or musical instrument for my 18 month old. For pull toys, however, there is only one choice -- one of my shoes, pulled by a shoe lace. He pulls it around as if it is making some kind of noise. I often can only find one shoe in the morning.

Air popper for my oldest!

Oh my. My brothers when they were younger come to mind more than my kids. Lemme think here.

One brother made out with the vaccuum cleaner as well...and I won't go into detail. :)

Other brother used to put on a plastic gun belt while in nothing but his diaper, steal Dad's belt and the fireplace shovel and make a guitar out of it. He would then serenade us to Twisted Sister's 'We Aren't Gonna Take It' while playing the shovel and doing pelvic thrusts. Rather disturbing.

My eldest son...still to this day...will use a norwegian decorative box top from a box of mine (as a shield), any cardboard box (as armour) and any paper towel roll (as a telescope) as well as a broken broom handle (sword) to engage the 5 year olds on the street in full scale battles. Fix that image in your head and imagine a child running down the street towards a battalion of cowering 5 year old girls, his broom handle...I mean sword...held aloft...bellowing..."I AM SPARTACUS!!!!"

That child is 15 years old.

The youngest child, well, he'll steal anything and mangle it into weird art. Or stab it into his wall. But his behaviour doesn't really count in this category.

Me? I used to steal the gold dinner napkins and form bikinis/skirts out of them (complete with a wad of grape hubba bubba bubble gum stuck in my belly button as a 'belly jewel' and pretend I was a Solid Gold Dancer. *facepalm* On stage (kitchen table). While vehemently declaring to my 3 yr and younger brother that I was "NOT the most famous dancer EVER!"

Oh god. They got it from me, didn't they?

My daughter uses the stand mixer as a carnival ride for her stuffed animals.

Not quite the same but my daughter used to have "favorite fellas" that went every where with her (for about a week at a time). One favorite fella was a burned out lightbulb and one was a crocheted hanger. Both went to church, etc.

She used to also go to church with yard stuck in her tights. She was a pony

My son used to use my pans as percussion instruments. My muffin tins were used as if he were in a production of "Stomp". They were crushed. Being the frugal (sometimes) Mom I am, I just smooshed then back into their original shape..kind of. I JUST replaced them this year...he is now 16!

I still like playing with the mixer, oh wait that would be wrong to share here.

Oliver is getting a blender for Christmas (sans blade of course!). He's 20 months, and loves to walk up and down the blender aisle at the store. Henry (my five year old) used to carry around a cell phone charger we named Barney.

Kids are weird.

My daughter used to dump all my craft paint out of my double-sided containers, that have a raised handle in the middle and pass sacrament to her dolls and stuffed animals.
My nephews used to sneak my sisters nylons, strip down, climb into them, stretching them to their necks and play snakes.

I guess I haven't let my kids be creative enough. My brother thought kissed a hot iron. does that count?

My oldest daughter used to be best friends with the trash can. She constantly was hugging it and licking it (sick, I know) and pulling it down to her level to play with....

My then 18 month old girl child zeroed in on her sister's little purse that had a long strap on it. She would drape it around her neck and totter around the house wearing it like a necklace. It freaked me out because I was afraid she would get it caught on something but she would not take it off for anything. I would have to slip it off after she went to sleep and then she'd wake up every morning screaming bloody-murder that it wasn't on anymore. (sigh)

My youngest son was about 3 when he became obsessed with The Wizard of Oz. This was back in the day when you video taped movies with the commercials and everything. He watched that movie 3 or 4 times a day for months. It drove his brothers and sisters crazy because he wouldn't let them watch cartoons when they got home from school. I bet he watched that movie 500 times before he all of a sudden didn't care about it anymore. What makes us all mad at him now? He says he doesn't remember ever watching that movie. (grrr)

My dad loves (LOVES) to tell the story of how obsessed I was with loose change. I would shove it down my diaper when I found it. "You could always hear her coming down the hall: jing jing jing!"

there's a wooden pole in my house that used to be a curtain holder/room divider and now it's a fishing pole, a sword or even a trumpet... my kids even use the boxes from the garbage such as pizza boxes or diaper box, etc for their crafts.. and to think I could have saved money on the construction paper I bought them and remains untouched... ugg!

my daughter used to have a bouncy ball (about soccer ball size) that she named Spatula. Spatula went everywhere (around the house) with her and she would have long and meaningful conversations with him on a regular basis. then a few weeks after naming him, she decided it was time for an additional sidekick. so she got a play spatula from her play kitchen and named him....Spatula. apparently when a bouncy ball procreates, you get a play spatula, because she was quite adamant that the ball and spatula were father and son. most confusing stage ever.

That is hilarious and too adorable!

My daughter carries our handheld calculator around the house pretending it's her cell phone and calls her daycare friends.

My boys regularly use my wooden spoons or spatulas as their swords and the lids to my pots as their shields. It's kinda cute...until it's time for dinner and I have to wash everything before I can start making dinner.

My son has a weird fascination bordering on obsession with toilet brushes and toilet plungers. He goes into anyone's house and will immediately goes to their bathroom to find one or both and then proceed to wield them around the house like swords. He also really enjoys brooms and toothbrushes. So I can't tell if he's destined for a career in the janitorial services or as a dentist.

My 3 year old son has all kinds of "guys" to play with, but hardly ever pulls them out. Instead, he uses his fridge alphabet, my mixing spoons, a detachable part of my hair dryer, and basically anything that isn't really a toy. They talk to each other and get into all sorts of mischief.

we have a radio that my son plays with. he also pulls it around by the cord.

My nephew used to carry around a hanger and say he was a tow truck, because of the hook. I mentioned to my sister that using her dough hook would be cooler for him, and sure enough my nephew discovered that a few weeks later.

My older brother used to play in the toilet. My mom tried everything to get him to stop, but to no avail. Finally, she designated one toilet in the house to be his, sanitized it, forbade anyone to use it for its intended purpose, and just let him play.

When I banned my daughter's pacifier except for naptime, she discovered that the knobs on the kitchen drawers were just the perfect height for her to suck on. She sat and slobbered all over them while I made dinner at night.

My glue gun! He's buzz lightyear! I can't wait until he tries to use it after it's been plugged in for a while. Maybe a nice mom would by him a real toy gun....

When I was like 5 I came out to entertain my teenage sister and a group of her friends... with a towel around my waste and hot pink furry earmuffs around my chest. I sang songs from the little mermaid! Since I still know a lot of these people, this story is super embarrassing!

The popcorn popper. He'd bring us the bowl sometimes, too. But he used to drag the popper around the house by the cord, too.

I used to play our old vacuum as a guitar...the model that had the suction unit and beater bar, then a three foot long metal tube, then the hose attached to the unit on wheels. The unit on wheels was my amp, which I would constantly adjust for sound, and the hose was the lead cord, the metal tube was my guitar neck, which I would riff wildly, up and down, and of course, the bottom, with the beater bar/roller, was where I strummed the strings! I was far more 'infamous', than 'famous'! I had a few paid gigs, though. Aahhh...those were the days.

When my daughter was around a year old she fell in love with one of my moms make up brushes and wouldn't let it go. She carried it around everywhere. When we would go in department stores the make up ladies thought she had taken it!

It's been said already, but my kids really, really want to play with the toilet plunger. I don't let them, of course, but still!

They also love hangers and the vacuum attachments.

My son is obsessed--completely obsessed--with power cords. He's 10 months, and he knows where all of the cords in the house lurk, and if you turn your back for two seconds he's turbo-crawling across the room to get at them. He also loves my husbands shoes and tries to kiss them. Oh and his little baby hairbrush. He carries that around with him, in his mouth.

My son takes the cats toys. But he can make just about anything laying around a robot or phone or gun.

I was the weird child... I played with vegetables. I had a pet cabbage for months, until my mom found the hiding spot in my room. It smelled like only rotten cabbage could smell, but I loved it.

My kids tie everything to one end of a jump rope and drag it all over the house.
Love some of the other stories :~)

When my son was two he would use the knife sharpner, the long pole thing in the knife set, as a sword and the dough hook from my mixer to be a pirate. It was the most attention that dough hook ever got.

My 19 month old is obsessed with the vacuum cleaner as well. He has a toy one that he rolls the wheels off of. But, his one true love is "Vac" which is the real working vacuum. He squeals with delight whenever I get it out. We have the cleanest floors in the country because he literally begs me to vacuum several times a day. When I feel like it, I oblige him. When I don't, he throws himself on the ground and cries near the closet, beating on the ground begging for me to unleash the beast. When I do get it out, he literally hugs and kisses it. He pets it and says, "Ooooh".

His second best love is his "Hi". That would be my husband's old Blackberry. He "talks" on it for hours. When he gets in trouble, he loses phone priviledges just like a teenager. That one really cracks me up.

When my son was 18 months he pulled around my old, dead curling iron for like 3 months. I finally gave in and opened the electronic obnoxious talking caterpillar pull toy someone gave him for his first birthday. He's almost 3 and still loves that stupid thing.

My oldest son loved the spatula. My second son loved tampons. My current baby loves water bottles. My oldest daughter still puts scarves in her pants to pretend she has a tail. All have managed to reprogram my VCR and calculator such that I had to spend hours with the manuals to reset the devices to normal.
