The T.V. Martyr/ Western Union Father's Day Giveaway!

Father's Day is fast approaching and I am struggling with gift ideas for my husband. What do you get a man who has everything? He already has a 19" inch television set purchased in the early 90s, a broken X-box, and a VCR from the Reagan administration.

My sister, who is visiting us this week, broke the news gently. "That TV is an embarrassment," she said. "I have to squint to see the picture, and I'm only three feet away."

The announcement that the only t.v. in our house is an eye sore (and may cause them as well) was not a news flash. My husband's desire for a larger television, preferably one with remote control, led me to purchase a 32" set for him last year for Christmas. After everyone appropriately praised the purchase, the object sat unopened in our living room for a week before my husband returned it. The guilt of spending so much money on an item that we really didn't need got the best of him.

Over the next few months, I felt increasingly bad about depriving my husband of such an important symbol of masculinity, so I purchased an even larger television for him for his birthday in March. As I dragged the box out of its hiding place in the hall closet, my husband's emotions of surprise and excitement quickly gave way to feelings of unworthiness and frugality. My husband politely declined the gift and I returned the television the next day.

"You know, at some point, Tim might actually decide to keep one of the televisions that you buy him," my sister reminded me last night. We were in the home theater section of the electronics store, where I was picking out my husband's Father's Day gift.

I threw back my head and laughed. "Impossible!" I replied. Owning a new t.v. for more than twenty-four hours (and actually removing said television from its original packaging) would elevate my husband out of martyrdom, and he likes feeling persecuted way too much to make that sacrifice.

FATHER'S DAY GIVEAWAY!

I'm very excited to be joining forces with Western Union to give the martyr in your life an awesome gift this Father's Day.

Western Union is giving one lucky winner $100 CASH!
No hidden fees, obligations, or commitments. Your winnings will be transferred to the Western Union agency of your choice (chances are, the closest one is your grocery store!).

Western Union makes it easy to send and receive money to loved ones with over 300,000 agent locations worldwide (44,000 in the U.S. alone). In this current economy, providing some extra cash may be one of the easiest--and in many cases, most appreciated--things you can do this Father's Day.

Did you know that Western Union isn't just for transferring money overseas? I've used Western Union to send money to relatives living in Spain, Mexico, and Brazil, but my dad sent money to me when I was in college and I lost my wallet in the middle of the Nevada desert (don't ask) and I needed money for gas. Western Union can send money in minutes, the next day, or directly to a bank account, either online or over the phone. Use cash, credit, or debit cards.

In addition to their money transfer services, Western Union makes it easy to pay bills, make purchases, and manage your budget with bill payment services and convenient money orders. Who knew?

To enter this special giveaway, all you need to do is leave a comment that includes your "best" (interpret this however you see fit) Father's Day Gift idea.

Contest starts NOW and ends THIS FRIDAY, June 12th at midnight EST. The lucky winner will be announced the next day. Want an extra chance to win? Post a link to this contest on your blog and leave a second comment!

GOOD LUCK!

Well, the best gift was the fact that we just bought a house. So that is his Father's Day gift (was my Mother's Day gift as well!).

Needless to say, because of said Parent Days purchase, we could use the $100.

This is my husband's first father's day (finally!) after taking almost 5 years to get pregnant. I thought about making a sculpture with specimen cups to remind him of all the ones he's had to fill over the years with all the infertility treatments. But he might not be overjoyed to be reminded of all that time spent in a closet. So I'm going with Bacon-of-the Month Club instead.

My husbands best gift will be the John Deer riding lawn mower he has always wanted. After 6 years of push mowing almost 3/4 of an acre he will be so excited!!!

I, do not sink to the level of my husband's Mother's Day Giving of breath mints and anything else sold right next to the checkout stand. Instead I put a lot of thought into my gifts...namely gifts that can benefit me in some way like tools to fix things around the house, and gift certificates or vacations so he has to take me away!

I am 37 weeks pregnant and would love to give my husband a baby for father's day this year!

My husband doesn't like when I spend money on him so we try to do something non-returnable and heartfelt. Every year we have gotten a plain white tie and covered it with iron-on transfer pictures of the kids. And one day when the kids get older I'll just let them draw pictures for him.

I want to win this so much. My husband definitely needs $100 cash for Father's Day. I am torn between a tiller for the garden and a BBQ. At least that way, sometimes HE will be making dinner. :)

Well, a tie, of course. Always a tie... right? And if not a tie, a new grill for my manly man.

The best gift to give my husband this year would be a new grill. He watches food network and has many good ideas that he now needs to put into practice.

We just bought a new tv, so that won't do. lol My husband would love tickets to a Kenny Chesney concert, but alas, I couldn't possibly afford that. $100 would help though!

My husband already got his Father's Day gift. It was a very expensive ticket to see the Red Wings play game 5 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals. Not to mention, he also got to meet Ted Lindsay and get his picture taken with him.

For my dad and father-in-law, well, they'll both got autographed copies of Ted Lindsay's book, Seven.

I think the best father's day present is something from the kids. We always made my dad a silly t-shirt or something, and he wore them faithfully for years! My dh isn't big on gift-getting (he likes giving them, but feels bad getting them) so we always just do something fun together as a family.

La Yen said...

Bacon of the month? They make that? Because that would be a happy Father's Day indeed! As it is, I think he is getting a fancy cell-phone charging station and a ticket to go see whatever lame movie he wants to see (with the benefit of not having to take me along!)

Oh well I guess he's getting a brand spankin new coffee cup! His last one from last year is broken.

My Dad hates Fathers Day because he says it's the crappiest present day ever. So, I make it a point to prove him right. My best Father's Day present is to go into a horrible discount store and buy the UGLIEST tie I can find.

Well it all depends what he got you for Mother's Day. This year I got squat (well... a dishwasher we got a week before Mother's Day because we haven't had one in forever and found one for $30 at a garage sale all of a sudden became my Mothers Day present when I was pouty on Mothers Day). So for Father's Day, last week my husband got himself some nintendo game thing. I think that's the best gift... I'll let him that was his Fathers Day gift when he's all pouty.

kandra said...

Oo pick me! My poor husband generally gets ties for Father's Day because he's a teacher and needs lots of them. Last year was one with our son's face all over it. This year I've switched it up though and bought an authentic on-field Red Sox ball cap. He'll be thrilled!

I like to think the best Father's Day gift my Dad ever received was twin daughters. My sister and I were born the day before Father's Day in 1981 and when our birthday falls on a Sunday, we get to celebrate it with Father's Day! = ]

Unknown said...

The "best" gift would be winning that $100 to give to my dear hubby. I lost my job over 6 months ago and haven't had any luck in scoring a new one. Hubby works hard to make sure there's a roof over our heads, food in our bellies, the bills get paid evenually, the cars have gas and there's diapers on our child's bottom. We simply can't afford luxuries like mother or father day gifts right now. Being able to give him $100 to spend on his self for once would be awesome.

Carla said...

For my busy husband, the best Father's Day gift would be a day of laziness... TV, video games, lots of good food- all being served to him happily by us.

Callie said...

we dont do gift, unfortuanaley mothers day is first and since i dont get anything he doesnt either.. you think he'd leard after 6 years if he buys me something, i would buy him something? me actually "getting" him something could change the whole scheme of our gift relationship, i think its worth a try!

Well, I linked it on my blog so here's comment #2... Really what my husband would want would be a new car, to be done with school, a Wii- basically a bunch of stuff that's not going to happen for him right now :)

A few years ago my husband wanted a PDA so bad he couldn't stand it. I looked at his life and wondered what on earth did he need one for? He has no appointments to worry about and I send all the cards and pay the bills. But he wanted one. I am a stay at home mom and I worked so hard to save up MY OWN money to buy him a PDA. I did it and I gave it to him for Father's Day. He never used it. I even programmed it with all kinds of useful things on it like birthdays and all the scriptures. It sat on our dresser. Now I don't know if he even knows where it is. So I will be giving my husband a cheeseball this year. I know he will use that :D

Mary said...

My husband recieved a cupon for a free tie from a mens' clothing store. He asked me what he should do if he didn't like any of the "free" ties and I told him to just pick one for my dad or his, it would be a super cheap gift for Fathers' Day.

Zanna said...

The best gift would be a week long vacation to the Caribbean sans whiny children or dirty diapers. Barring that, a dinner out and a nice card are the best I can think of.

Kaylynn said...

My husband would love it if I (or I hired someone) to tackle the gigantic bushes against our side fence. He has wanted to trim and prune them ever since we bought the house a year ago - but between supporting the kids on Saturdays with baseball and spending time with me it always gets put on the back burner. If I could get him anything this year - that would be it!

The best gift for my husband, father of my child, might be NOT reminding him about botching Mother's Day.

My father is so hard to buy for... Many gifts have gone unused or passed on to my sister- which aggravates me to no end. What I've started to do is sponsor an animal for a year - thru an animal or bird sanctuary.

Hes an animal lover and LOVES these gifts and will usually continue to sponsor them after the year is over...So he gets a gift he loves and it helps the life of an animal or bird in need

For the martyr in our house the best gift is a Best Buy Gift card. It's all he asks for and all he wants. It drives me nuts.

Rachel said...

My husband makes it nearly impossible to buy anything for him that he really wants. To ask him, he doesn't need or want anything that we could afford...sure an all expense paid golf trip or some kind of MMA event would be great. Does $100 cover all that? So, months ago he mentioned that he would love to have one of those thingy's that disinfect the toothbrushes. He's convinced that all germs and illness lead back to the brush. I'm sure he thinks that I have forgotten, which let's be honest...I have found myself standing in the mall saying "What was it that he wanted????" But this Father's Day...What says "We love YOU!" more than sanitized toothbrushes? Am I right?

Amanda said...

Since my husband's birthday falls right around Father's Day, we sometimes do a combined present (or forget one or both all together). This year, though, I picked up these great little "Made For Dad" books at the discount bookstore. I had each of my kids draw in them (they were scrapbook style books where kids can draw pictures of them and their dads doing various things) and then make a book of coupons to put in the pocket in the back. (Everything but the crayons were included in the kit.) The kids had fun making them, my husband LOVED them, and I got props for thinking of something so thoughtful. He didn't even notice that I didn't get him anything!

One Father's day, we bought my dad the truck he was looking at. My mom had told him that the dealership had sold it but in fact, she had picked it up. We parked it in the driveway and put a HUGE red bow on top.

Hello Killer Giveaway!

For father's day when my kid was almost 2, we put on daddy's shirt and tie, and stuck his fat lil feet in daddy's shoes and I printed that pic next to a poem. It's sort of 'schmoopy' for us, but it turned out awesome!

I think the "best" gift for my husband this Father's Day would be--Letting him play Mom for the day. You know, dressing them, feeding them (every meal and snacks in between), diapering, going to the potty with, entertaing them, and cleaning up all the messes in between, bathing them, and putting them to bed. He could really spend a TON of quality time with our girls that way!!!

The second is the Father's Day 8 years ago when we brought our second gorgeous baby girl home from the hospital!

One year when we were completely broke I baked my husband a "boob cake" with Hostess cake sno ball "boobs" on a gorgeously curvy torso fashioned from cake. I even threw in a frosting bikini bottom . Then we sat as a family and enjoyed our wholesome treat. I think he liked it. It beat the low quality (practically see-through) t-shirt with various children's smudgy hand-prints on it. We made him wear that on a business trip.

Quite a few years ago we got my dad a Big Foot Wagon. The best part is when he heard us rolling it up, he thought it was one of those push reel mowers, because my mom had been telling him to get one for the exercise. He was so excited when it was a wagon instead! It was perfect for him to haul his cooler, etc, over to the neighbors or to a parade. And it's great for yardwork. I use mine to haul bags of mulch around the yard. It's actually got pneumatic tires - which are SO quiet compared to those crappy plastic tires they put on those plastic wagons. This is a MAN'S wagon. :)

Awesome giveaway idea. I will not be purchasing any thing for my lovely husband this year b/c he never uses/wears what I get him on this special day. I will on the other hand be filling his pillowcase full of the toilet paper card board tube things that toilet paper goes on. ( I've been saving them) He will not throw these things away, even though the trash can is oh about 12 inches away. It drives me bananas.

With the $100 I think I will buy him a economy size/industrial size toilet paper holder with that awful paper to go in it.

Haha! My wife does the same thing. So a few years a go, I gave her an envelope full of cash and told her she had to buy a new wardrobe. I told her she had 4 weeks to spend it, and anything unspent, would be lit on fire and burned to ashes.

(I even had her submit receipts to prove it was spent on clothes for her, and not diapers or babywipes).

Her frugality got the best of her and the fear of watching money be burned pushed her to follow through and get the clothes.

The "best" gift? That's a good question. I have no idea what to get my husband for father's day. My son suggested a sword so they can play together, a fake gun so they can play guns together and my favorite, a transformer (he already has about 20 of those) that daddy will let him play with. I'm thinking more along the lines of not nagging him to get stuff done, just for the day :)

My "best" father's day gift is what ever my husband says he wants this year. We secretly tell each other what we want and then the kids "surprise" us with it.

Pick Me... I love Western Union! My parents have used it several times to help family members out.

And besides this is my husband's first father's day.

My husband recently took up photography as a hobby and is very gifted at it. (www.michaelgilliam.com)
I would love to have the photo he took of the Mississippi River Bridge in Vicksburg, MS, printed on stretch canvas for him for father's day. If I win, that is what I will do with the money!

The best gift for my husband would be this $100. That tv looks EXACTLY like the one that we have. Pretty awesome!

OK I REALLY NEED THAT $100 FOR MY HUSBAND. HE NEVER BUYS ANYTHING FOR HIMSELF AND ALWAYS BUYS ME STUFF TO SURPRIZE ME. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO GET HIM EITHER AND 100 DOLLARS WOULD BE PERFECT FOR HIM TO SPEND ON HIMSELF!

the best gift would be for me to pull all the weeds in the yard...I'd do it for $100 :)

I strongly feel it was divine intervention that Father's Day falls after Mother's Day. When we approached our first "real" MD and FD I was excited what my husband was going to give me. Well...he gave me nothing. So I thought I would show him what a true FD gift was and went around to various golf courses and got gift certificates so that he could golf numerous time guilt free. Of course he LOVED the gift (I admit it was a good one), but he had not remorse about my lack of Mom Day gift. So I fumed for a few months and realized that these 2 holidays can actually be quite detrimental to one's marriage. I decide right then that I would put in as much effort as he did. So...the next Mom day arrived and I awoke expecting nothing. I was not disappointed. I was told "I was going to get you a big pot of flowers to put on the front porch (something I DID want)...but I ran out of time. I'm sorry." So the very next month what should arrive but Father's Day. When he awoke he was SUPER excited since he got that killer gift last year. However this year he was told "I was going to get you a new set of golf clubs because I know you wanted them so much...but....I didn't feel like it".

Mom's Day is much better now!

The best gift for my dad would is probably a gift card to Goodwill. I can't make this crap up. He can spend hours in there, rifling through t-shirts with stupid sayings on them. It has to be one of his favorite things to do, bless his heart.

I think the best Fathers Day gift would be an all expense paid vacation for two to Hawaii....(him and me)

No, really, I'm only thinking of all the stress he has been under lately!

Gina said...

My husband's "gift" for Father's day will be not having to do anything. I will take care of the kids and house entirely. which is really no different from any other Sunday; except on Father's day I will get to point out all that I do as the "great gift I gave him". hah

I am broke so if I win then maybe I could actually get hubby something for Fathers Day. Otherwise it will be homemade gifts from the kiddos again.

Melissa said...

I don't know if it's the best gift, but my hubby's getting the "holy grail" of hoses for Father's Day - a Flexogen (atleast that's what one of the Amazon reviewers called it). I have to be very practical with my gift giving as well. It has to be better than my Mother's Day present, which was nothing (I'm a martyr too)!

A cruise to Alaska would be the best thing I could give my hubby - but he'll probably have to settle for a new shirt.

I'm suprised there aren't more comments like this but all my husband gets for Father's Day is to relive how our four children came to be. I know it's a sacrifice on my part, but I figure I can put out once a year! :)

Since I can never buy my husband anything, I may just say here's $100 go buy yourself the right wrench instead of me buying you the wrong one and you returning it and buying the one that's not on sale and costs about twice as much... he may appreciate that. haha!

Here's my "best" father's day gift idea for you. Buy your hubby a TV online so he can't return it! :)

I've seen my hubby looking at a new RC car and I would love to give him $100 towards that or one of his other hobbies. My hubby would LOVE Depeche Mode concert tickets for Fathers Day. He's stuck in the 80's and is a die hard fan. He never gets tired of DM concerts...

Well my idea of perfect Father's day gift would be to let them be themselves , that is by not asking them to take bath, shave, help in household chores, baby sit their own kids or get up from the bed whole day !!

Francie said...

well....on mothers day my hubby did not get me anything because he said i was not his mother!!! LOL so i recieved cards from the kids, flowers picked out of my flower bed and ceramicidunnowhats from school. so if i were to give my suggestion for a fathers day gift it would have to say, ask my kids because...after all, it is THIER father not mine!!!

When my 10 yr old daughter was 5 yrs old she wanted to give her daddy "breakfast in bath". Everyone has had breakfast in bed, why not bath. The night before hubby asked me to give him a hint. I said "you have to keep your underwear on." On the morning of Father's day we filled the tub, brewed some coffee and scrambled some eggs. We also made a sign that said "no hands in water". We woke him up with kisses and said "your bath is ready."

VERY SIMPLE and a sure to please! MY HUBBY loves my homemade bread THERE is nothing like the aroma of homemade bread. Even beter its DELICIOUS! probably most people have the ingredients to make a loaf of homemade bread. Tie a ribbon around the bread with some homemade cards that the kids made. Its easy on the pocket book in this economy! ;)

You know, I'm quite beside myself here. No matter what I buy he either doesn't use or takes back. I hound and hound him for answers and to no avail. The best gift for my hubby is anything in the tool department at Sears!...he already has more tools then he will ever need or use, but it is a guy thing!

As for your hubby returning the TV...try this one. It is time for Him to receive and enjoy the gift in the love and manner it is given. To return it would cause your blessing to be returned!

This will be my husband's first Father's Day and since I'm a stay-at-home-mom I have all the time in the world (hahahahaha!) to maybe try to make something crafty. I'm thinking of maybe doing something with footprints or handprints. We'll see.

My father always asks for the same gift each year. I make him a basket with all his favorite treats: oatmeal raisin cookies, dutch apple bread, molassas cookies, and banana nut bread. I usually throw in a surprise, too. This year I am going to try rosemary shortbread. I hope he likes it!

When I was in college I got my fire fighting dad a toy firetruck and filled it with his favorite candies: giant cherry cordials and Idaho Spuds. (You should try them, they're disgusting, only something a dad would like) I left it on my kitchen table and left for work. When I came home all the candy had been opened, (only partially eaten)and were scattered all over the place. My roomies thought it was a creative invite for a date for one of them. That was Saturday night and all the stores that sold that gross candy were closed, so he ended up with a toy firetruck. I'm sure it just thrilled him to death.

Last year I bought him one of those generic "World's Best Dad" tees. Then I designed an iron on add-on for the back that said, "Property of (my kids names), Father's Day 2009, then scanned their handprints onto it. He LOVED it. Still wears it proudly.

The best Father's Day gift for my hubby would be to keep his job as a special ed science teacher (teacher licensure issue - resolved on my hubby's end but now waiting for school). He still won't know if he has a job until a week or so from now. :(

Okay... so I think the best Father's Day gift we gave to my husband was... looking at frugality and also never having enough to get what he REALLY wants... I'd have to pick a homemade gift. My children made a coupon gift that allowed Dad to have free hugs, kisses, free chore days, all night T.V. pass with no interruptions (especially during the NBA finals..), night out with the guys w/o planning, etc.. Of course, I threw in a couple of husband coupons for date night already planned, free of kids nights, etc..

okay, so not the big electronic gift but a gift that keeps giving after father's day.. that's the way we like it!

As we added children to our family, my husband's collection of "Harley stuff" moved from spare room to spare room and eventually to a box in the attic and then, he just got rid of it. We don't have any spare rooms any more and any evidence that a man lives here has effectively been removed from the house. So... for Father's Day this year, I took a really nice black and white photograph of his Harley and am having it blown up and framed to hang in the place of his choice in the house .

Probably the best gift would be um...free, and um...(nudge, nudge, wink, wink) but I would rather just BUY him something.

Your link in my google reader to your new post about e.l.f. makeup is no longer there. I rushed to buy up some of their stuff just now and when I went to link you to tell my sisters about it, it was gone. So I did some checking on my own and guess what? Not a legitimate email, it turns out. e.l.f. did NOT get bought out by Nordstrom. Their stuff is a dollar all the time. I feel pretty stupid having just spent $25 on what sounds like trial-sized junk. How well did you check things out?
