Bangs!!!

I woke up on Sunday morning to find what appeared to be the remains of a small mammal on my bathroom floor.

"What is that?" I asked my husband as I leaned in for a closer look.

My husband poked the pile of hair with a pencil. "Where did that come from?" he asked.

The answer pranced in a few seconds later.

"What's up with the hat?" my husband asked my six-year-old daughter. She was wearing a church dress and a Phillies baseball cap.

"Any idea whose hair this is?" I asked, pointing at the pile.

My daughter thought it looked like Kellen's.

All of your brothers have shaved heads," I reminded her.

"Let's see the damage," my husband demanded.

After several minutes of cajoling, Camber finally removed the cap.

"Do you like my new bangs?" she asked.

My husband gasped.

I bit my knuckles.

Always the perfectionist, my daughter went the extra mile and gave herself a fancy mullet...which actually doesn't look nearly as bad as I thought it would. Thank goodness for thick and wavy hair.

****
Let me have them! Tell me your kids' haircutting stories.

i'm guilty of something similar. once when in elementary school i decided to trim my bangs because they were too long in my opinion. i did this 2 days before school pictures and didnt exactly cut my bangs in a straight line. got into a little bit of trouble with my mom

Someday I am planning to blog about the day my then four-year-old cut off ALL of her hair and most of her little sister's. It was awful. I was gone working out at the time. Maybe that's why I hate exercising so much...

I remember when I was younger, instead of cutting off my hair, I cut off an eye brow. Yes, just one. With scissors. To the skin-not like I could cut it without being to the skin. Yikes...

I just learned the other day that when my little kids were younger (probably around 4-5), Rachel used to cut Jenna's hair *all the time*! Jenna told the story very matter of factly... (I guess I was still too brain dead to notice most of the time!)

OH JANA! What a nice Mom you are for not posting a picture to be used as blackmail at some point in her future! =)

Our haircutting story was when Zoe (my oldest) was in Kindergarten. She was growing out her bangs, so she wore headbands a lot. My mom even got her a "fancy" one that tied in the back so it looked like a head WRAP, not a band.

One day, I was looking at her (around 4:45) and asked her if she tied the bow in the back herself. It looked like a bunch of hair had been caught up in the tying process. Her face fell and she quickly said, "I told Cara not to do it!" That's when I remembered that I'd sent Zoe to school with a ponytail...one that Cara cut off on the bus on the way home!

My 3 year old niece cut of her pigtails. Then she had a boy haircut. About a year and a half later she cut her bangs, and begged her mom not to give her a boy haircut again. So, to try to get the point across that you DON'T cut your own hair, she gave her another boy haircut!

I caught my 4YO daughter cutting my 1YO son's hair (luckily before too much damage was done!). She said, "But Suzie does it!" referring to the hairdresser I took them to at the time. I reminded her that Suzie was a *trained professional* - not a 4YO!

While I don't have any hair cutting stories yet(I have 2 boys, 2 & 5), my sister was once worn out from her 2 year old daughter. She laid down to just close her eyes for a second, and when she woke up she had a new do and so did her daughter. She had clipped a section on the very top of my sister's head right in front so everyone could see. :)

I have 2 daughters. I found the hair of the younger one in the desk drawer of the older one. Because her hair was so thick (and messy) it took a closer inspection to realize she had 1/2" bangs hiding under there.

My daughter who was like 10 at the time, SHAVED her eyebrows! Crazy! My son cut his eye lashed off after his teacher told him they were beautiful.

My husband (what husband in their right mind does this) GAVE my toddler bangs one night while I was out. I didn't discover it until I got up with her at two in the morning! That is the maddest I have EVER been at him!

When my sister was 2, we were all sitting around in the same room minding our own business while she was cutting paper with her safety scissors.

It wasn't until Mom was brushing out her hair at bedtime and a HUGE CHUNK fell out that we realised that, sometime during the evening, she had tested the scissors on her hair.

What impressed us was that she had managed to CUT HAIR with the scissors that most of us (grown people) couldn't figure out how to make cut PAPER.

She wore a cute barrette on that side of her head for a long, long time.

many, many stories...my 2 oldest girls have each chopped their hair 5 times. i still have a baby daughter, who knows how many more of these we'll deal with?!

one my favorites (and least traumatic) was when i got a call from my daughter's kindergarten teacher...she had cut her hair during art--the day before school pictures. it was lovely (not really). good luck!! :)

totally crawled under the crib and butched my naturally curly hair when I was three...my dad cried as he came up to my aunts and mom and grandma standing around me, after they tried to 'fix' the damage...luckily my hair grows fast and I was a cutie with or without long curly hair! LOL!

I have yet to have those emotions...my boys have yet to do that awful deed!

It's Murphy's Law...kids will always give themselves a new haircut right before picture day!

When my daughter was 4 she cut all her bangs off and the tips of her pigtails while I was on the phone. She was quite proud of her work.

I went to my friend's house to watch her girls last night and her 2 year old daughter had the CUTEST new SHORT do. I told her how much I loved the new style. She said that her 5 year old sister decided to play "Barbie Shop" and cut the right side REALLY short. Fortunately for the 2 year old she is adorable in short hair. I always said with my girls, "It's just hair it will grow back." But they never really started cutting each other's hair until their teen's and well sometimes it might have been better if they would have done it as young kids. ;)

Well, I have cut my hair as a child several times but that isn't the best one...

I shaved every hair on my body when I was around 9 or so...arms, legs and.....eyebrows. Yes, my eyebrows.
Too bad they didn't take a picture of that one.

Luckily my children have not done this yet (they are 9,6 and 4) but when I was about 4 I cut off all of my little sister's bangs - practically scalped her - right before pictures : ) My mom had to put a bonnet on her and she wore that bonnet for a few months!

Once, my two year old gave my six month old a pretty close crop. I discovered my baby had a large mole on the back of her head that I never knew about before. But my two-year-old did such a fine, even job that it grew out beautifully! We were really lucky. I still hate to think of how close sharp pointed scissors came to the back of the sweet round head!

I did it in 5th grade - chopped my bangs right off just before picture day. Long hair in the back, short spiky bangs in the front. I have photographic proof.

My son cut his clothes up (while wearing them) and my youngest daughter cuts hair all the time- her hair, doll hair, cat whiskers.

My Sister used to work weekends and her husband would watch their two girls. My neice cut her bang completely off..they were just little tiny hairs sticking straight up. My daughter's too young to do this yet (10 mos) but I did this myself when I was younger. When I was 3 or 4, I modeled for Nordstrom's kid department, and the night before a show, I decided to cut my hair. But since I only had left handed scissors, it was cut only on one side. My mom found me with a crew cut on one side, and long, curly hair on the other. She had to book an appointment with the hairdresser the next day at 7AM to do damage control

When I was little (6 I think), just hours from a portrait sitting I too decided I needed a haircut. One half of my bangs, gone! My Mom was horrified but still went through with the picture, it is awful but a great memory for my Mom :)

I did that as well when i was a little girl, probably about 8 or 9. I decided it would work better if I cut my bangs in the dark. When I turned on the light I was pretty disappointed with the out come. I was pretty embarrassed to go anywhere.

I thought this post was going to be about my family. We are the Bangs. Yep thats right imagine having that as a last name. My 5 year old and neighbor/neice cut my dear 3 year olds long gorgeous hair all the way off one day. Clear to the scalp in some places. that was 5 months ago. We are just barely getting to the recovery stage.

I have a cowlick at the crown of my head. It was much worse back in elementary school, so one day I decided to cut it off. I didn't realize that the length was keeping the hair from standing straight up! For the months it took it to grow out, I sported an "Alfalfa*" sprout.

*For you younguns, Alfalfa was from 'The Little Rascals.'

My 2 year old daughter cut her hair twice (over a 3 day period)with the baby fingernail cutting scissors. She had a complete mullet. She said she was Mulan...we banned the movie and book from our home for a very long time. She started preschool with her mullet and one night I went to the hospital to have an emergency appendectomy. When I came out of surgery my first thought was...Oh, no! It's school picture day! My husband, and some other Moms, tried their best to tame it, but man what a picture! A few years later after I returned home from the hospital from having my 4th child, I was combing the same daughter's hair and realized that a sizeable chunk was missing from the middle of her hairline. Apparently her friend got to her. It wasn't my best mothering moment...can you say raging hormones!

I was at the dentist and my cell phone kept ringing. Of course, I didn't answer it (my husband is the dentist and wouldn't permit it). When I finally checked my missed calls, it was the babysitter. Apparently, my son cut my daughter's hair to the scalp on the side of her head. We didn't do ponytails for a LONG time. where the heck was the babysitter when that was happening?!

When my daughters were 7 and 5 they both had long blonde hair (my pride and joy). The youngest's hair was a white blonde and wherever we went people would comment on both my duaghter's hair. One day after church my 7 year old came running up the stairs and screamed "Mom! Rosie just cut off her pigtails." The image of hair pulled up in pigtails with just little stubs sticking out of the elastics ran through my mind.

When I got downstairs I couldn't find her but then spotted her behind the family room rocking chair. I pulled her out and gasped when I saw her long blond hair laying on the floor. Luckily she didn't cut the pigtails to the elastic bands but she did cut them pretty short. I will always feel bad about what I did next. I totally lost it and screamed at her like a crazy person. And pretty much for the rest of the day I yelled at her whenever I saw her. I know I traumatized the poor kid. I took her to get it styled the next day and we were able to get a cute pageboy haircut out of it with just a couple of nicks showing. Then 2 weeks later she was at her friends house and they decided to cut each other's hair. Rosie came home that time with her bangs pretty much cut to the scalp. That's when I decided "oh well, it's just hair and it will grow back". I had to laugh the other day when Rosie's son cut his hair the night before his uncle's wedding. Total payback. And I'm proud to say that she didn't loose it like her mother did.

This is the story of my MOM as the culprit! I have a daughter who was nearly 2 and summer was starting with extreme heat. My baby's hair was just growing out nice and long with beautiful curls on the back down to her shoulders. I complained once to my mom about how long my baby's hair was at the front and needed a little trim for bangs yet I had no time to go to a hairdresser and too paranoid to do it myself. In hindsight I should have kept my mouth shut because I left my kids in my mom's care while hubby and I went on a date. Came home to find a freshly chopped really short hairdo that made me cry because my little girl looked like a boy!! My hubby was mad because he loved to play with her curls and wasn't sure if the curls would grow back out again. It has been a few months now and so far we can see evidence of curls growing out again.. thank heavens! What's funny was that my oldest daughter who is 7 kept telling my mom not to do it while she was cutting the hair, I think my mom thought she was doing us a favor and it was a summer hairdo -for BOYS! We find this subject not as painful as it used to be and I don't get upset anymore when I tell the story, but I have yet to laugh about it... which may be a while yet....

My youngest gave herself a couple of haircuts. The first was when she was 3. She cut it so close to her scalp that she had to get a buzz boy haircut in the back. Then she did it again when she was 4. This time she at least left a little length, though not much. My scissors are now under lock and key. :)

My Grandma love/hates to tell this traumatic story. When my Aunt was a toddler with curly red pigtails her older brother, my Uncle woke up before her and chopped both of her pigtails off. Subsequently, Grandma locked him in his room ALL DAY long with no food.

That sounds like child abuse but Grandma says she would have killed him so she was really saving his life by keeping him in there.

Maybe that puts it into perspective: hair isn't worth killing your kids over. It's an opportunity for a creative new haircut! (if there's any hair left. . .)

Yes, felt better when the woman at work recalled how she cut off her own bangs at 13...ouch.

I have two from the summer 2008.
My then 1 yr old had a double ear infection. I had not slept in 4 days. My husband and I had discussed me going the next day to get a hair cut as he left for work. My then 4 yr old and my one 2 yr old were the only children awake at the time. I put Alladin in the DVD player for them and laid down on the couch.
Apparently I fell asleep. I woke to the sound of scissors next to my ear. My then 4 yr and one 2 yr had cut my shoulder length hair down to almost nothing. My hairdresser laughed till she had tears when I told her and the entire time she was fixing my sons' attempt at a hair cut.
My then 5 yr old daughter decided two nights before the first day of Kindergarten to cut her waist length hair. She ended up with a bob when the hair dresser (same one that fixed mine the month before) fixed her hair. She told us later she wanted to look more like Dora, who was her favorite cartoon character.

I asked my husband to take our daughter to have her bangs trimmed a while back. When they returned I was speechless. My daughter who endured 1.5 yrs of letting an earlier haircut grow out had been shorn again. Th child had a dance recital in 10 days and nothing much left to put a tiara or hair piece in. Visit my blog and you can see her in the video from the rehersal. She's the one fdressed in lavender with the short hair.

Not wanting to upset the child I waitred until she had left the room and politely asked him if he had a death wish and why didn't he just have her bangs trimmed as I had requested. I also promised him that he might consider sleeping with his eyes open as I would be waxing one of his eyebrows. He's still waiting and it's been well over a year. He has been banned for the remainder of is mortal life to take her anywhere near a haircutting establishment

My daughter has actually had minimal hair cutting problems. We've had a small chunk or two taken out, but nothing drastic. (Thank goodness. Luckily Gma and Gpa are hairstylists, so we can fix it quickly if necessary.)
But the dog has gotten several hair cuts from our 4 year old. It's even worse because she's a short hair dachshund/chihuahua mix.
So it's more like a shave with scissors.

My daughter has cut her hair not once, but twice! The first time her older brother "helped" her and it was actually pretty cute and even. Two years ago, the day before her tonsils were to come out, was not so cute. I think that she was nervous. Mulan was her favorite movie at the time too (We have that in common, Sunshine). No surprise that Mulan was banned for a long time.
