OnStar FMV Mirror Review + $100 Visa Gift Card Giveaway

Everyone knows about OnStar: the comprehensive in-vehicle safety, navigation, and communications system. Up until recently, the system has been reserved for use only in GM cars.

That all has changed! I’m excited to announce the launch of the OnStar FMV rear-view mirror, which works in most vehicles.

The folks at OnStar were kind enough to send me a mirror to test out and I got it installed a few weeks ago. Here’s what is great about it: the system provides many of the same services as the original OnStar system including automatic crash response, turn-by-turn navigational routing, stolen vehicle tracking, hands-free calling, and roadside assistance. Plus, it’s easy to find. The system can be purchased at your local electronics retailer (ie. Best Buy, Frye, ABC Warehouse).

The new OnStar system is perfect for me because, like most moms, I practically live in my car. And one of my worst fears is finding myself in a position where I need help but am not able to get it. The OnStar FMV mirror provides the safety and peace of mind that we all need as parents and caretakers of young children.

When my car was new, I didn’t worry that much about it breaking down. Now that it’s creeping into old age, however, I find myself getting increasingly uneasy whenever I plan a road trip or head anywhere off the beaten path (which is five miles off the freeway in any direction in Florida). What would happen if my car breaks down...gulp...here…and with the kids? Since getting the OnStar FMV system, I feel like a huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. I am now free to roam the country or at least the swamplands of central Florida with fewer worries.

Having used the system for a few weeks now, I can personally attest to its ease and accessibility. I have my cell phone linked into the system so I can talk to people hands free. Also, just this afternoon, while I was loading something into the back of the car, my preschooler climbed into the front seat and pushed the OnStar emergency call button. The operator was on the line before I could blink my eye, asking me about the nature of my emergency. I was more than a little embarrassed to tell the poor woman that I did need assistance, but not the kind that she could provide :)

While I'm going to work really, really hard to make sure that little fingers don't push any more buttons for fun, it's a relief to know that even the smallest of children can reach the OnStar team if they need to.

I am happy to announce that Blogher and OnStar are teaming up to offer one lucky reader of the Meanest Mom blog a $100 Visa gift card!

Want a chance to win? Just leave a comment below that includes an answer to this question: How could the OnStar system help your family?

I really need the roadside assistance. We are driving cars that are on their last legs (wheels, body, engines, transmissions, etc...)and I would love some peace of mind that if we got stranded, we could get help quickly. :)

I have epilepsy and even though it's been long enough since my last seizure that I can drive legally...I'm still nervous about having the kids in the car! OnStar would make us all feel much safer!

Since I live in the city it would help me if my car broke down and then I could call for help. I would also use it for hands free cell phone use.

I watch too many of those missing people shows where some woman was stuck upside down in her car for 5 days. I'm so excited that this is now available for my foreign-made car!

Well I since I don't have children the OnStar system will help me not back over my aging parents as they walk behind me with their walker and cane. I'd hate to put them back in the hospital after they both just had double knee replacements.

Kristina said...

The peace of mind that comes with OnStar would be fantastic. Any number of things can go wrong when out and about with 4 kids! And of course the husband's always in a meeting when I need him.

This is so exciting, I had OnStar in my Suburban, but now I have a Sequioa and no OnStar, I've got to go get me one of these. I could use it most in my 1996 4Runner that has almost 200K miles on it, I drive 35 miles to work and there are alot of places I wouln't like to break down alone...

When I call my husband and the first thing I say is "Are you at your desk?" he knows I am going to ask him for directions or a phone number. He would loooove for me to not have to call him.

Oh I love OnStar! Was so sad to have to give up my (wonderfully aged) Impala last year. Unfortunately my new ride didn't come with this lovely lifesaver. I've not had good luck with GPS, so that would be my main reason for using it.

I would feel better knowing that help be on the way with just the touch of a button, especially since my kids would be able to use it if I wasn't able to.

On-Star sure would have been handy when my twins locked themselves in my car. With my keys. Hubby was at work 40 miles away. It was 100 degrees outside. Thankfully I talked them into opening the door before having to call 911.

Even though I love my Honda, it is getting up in years. Having this device would ease my mind as well. I am not the best at keeping my cell phone on me and charged so having an alternate form of communication if my vehicle were to be in an accident would be great.

Let's see between hitting deer, getting flat tires, and locking myself out of my car with 3 kids this would have been a nice handy item. Oh the many things I could do with an OnStar mirror! If I was selected, though, I would hand it straight over to my dear mother. She, like most working moms, practically lives in her car. All of her children are involved in many different activities that take her around the state, and she would be much better off with the gps. Her work and her children take up a lot of her cell phone minutes, and having the hands-free calling would really help her, especially to be focused on the road and not her hands. I'm sure a lot of women have these same things going on in their lives, but my mother deserves a little peace of mind. She works so hard for her family and for everything else she chooses to be involved in and since she is in her car for most of her free time, this would be a wonderful gift for her. As for the $100 Visa gift card, she deserved a little trip to the mall where she could pick out something just for herself.

How would Onstar help my family? Just having the peace of mind of knowing someone is at the ready to help in times of emergency is priceless. There are just so many things that can, and do, go wrong on the highway. This would be great to have. Neither of the cars we own have this feature.

Eekkkk, almost missed the cut off. Give me the gift card, Mrs. Tuna got laid off from work and needs cheering up.

I do home health so my job involves driving to homes in places I've never even heard of before. Being able to get directions, get help, and use the blue tooth feature for my iphone would increase the safety of my job

My son's away at college now so it's just me - he worries about me, and vice versa. OnStar would give us both peace of mind :)

I'm a mini-van-driving mom of 5 young children. Having Onstar might calm my abject terror at the thought of being broken down in some awful place with 5 kids in the back.

I need some kind of hands-free option that is easy. I now have 3 kids in 3 schools and I'm spending way too much time in the car. If I could conveniently and safely make calls and take care of some of my responsibilities along the way, that would really help me balance my life better.

My husband works 12-hour shifts and has a long commute. Knowing that he had the onstar resource would definitely give me a bit more peace of mind about his safety!

With a husband who travels internationally a lot and three young boy I would love the emergency call button. Also, the hand free calling would probably help prevent most of those emergencies from even happening.

It would be great if I got lost or got a flat!

My cell phone is always dying, and my car's charger does not work -- so I worry that if I break down somewhere at night or in a remote area I won't be able to call for assistance --the Onstar emergency notification system would be a great back up system!

AKutarna said...

I would love one of these! I have a HUGE fear of my kids locking themselves in our car. Also, I am terrible at directions so that would be an added bonus. Thanks for the opportunity.

I have OnStar in my GMC. I would love to win this for my grandmother. She loves to travel in my car because we can press the button to see how far destinations are.

I am eternally lost. And late. And I have a 13 month old who thinks riding in the car is the most offensive thing anyone has ever asked him to do. Having a gps would mean less screaming. From Max, and me!

Hands free talking w/o a bluetooth would be awesome :)

We had OnStar in one of our vehicles earlier - and yes, my kids pressed the red emergency button before I had time to stop them. The response team was so fast on the line, that it is just a relief to know that help is there when you need it most. And the guy on the other end didn't yell at me either for the prank call -- that's always nice! :)

Alyssa said...

Ooo, the turn by turn navigation would be a lifesaver for me. It'd definitely help with those in-car argument we currently have due to our GPS that is MOSTLY right on its directions.
*Turn left*
"Turn here. The GPS says turn here!!'
"Turn where? There's no turn, I can't-"
*Turn left*
"TURN!!!"
"I CAN'T!!"
*Recalculating.*

I think it would help the safety of my family. I live in rural Montana and it's a long drive to anywhere. I am always nervous with the kids in car, especially in the winter, when we take a long drive. Knowing that someone was a button touch away would make me feel at ease.

Lisa Gibson said...

With four little kids in the car the peace of mind that we would have the help we might need and the safety of hands free driving for when a call must be made or taken.

In addition to added safety, etc, I think OnStar is awesome because you can talk to someone and have them tell you where nearby gas stations are, help with restaurant choices, etc.

On Star would be THE star in our car by its navagation system and blue tooth hands free phone talking mainly, (whoo hoo!) and knowing that help is a push button away; all amazing!
Thank you.
