Like most Duke grads, my husband and I have what several (lame-o) ESPN sportswriters call "excessive school pride" (is there such a thing?!!!). Throughout the NCAA tournament, I have kept my enthusiasm to myself.
"I would hardly call painting your fingernails blue and wearing Duke gear every day for the past three weeks low-profile," my neighbor pointed out.
There are haters everywhere.
Including, I am sad to admit, in my own house.
As we learned during last year's tournament, Cortlen is a die-hard Duke fan, unless they are playing a school whose name includes a reference to his favorite body part.
Against better judgment, I'm letting him stay up to watch the game. On one condition.
"One mention of butts," I warned, "and you're gone."

my 6 and 9 yr old boys thought that 'buttler' was hysterical. they are sitting here now chanting 'BUTT-ler! BUTT-ler!'
That's pretty darn cute! My five year old loves the very same word-and has deemed "Diarrhea of a Wimpy Kid"...the best movie of the year:) Our kids would have so much to talk about.
Love. It. I'm just as bad w/ SEC college football. and don't your neighbors know that you wearing team gear = wins??
My toddler is currently yelling, "Go Dukies" at the TV, am am I. I lived in NC long enough to know: Carolina or Duke for b-ball.
gave our (duke-born) triplets benedryl and sent them to bed (you know...'cause of the pollen and stuff) so we can watch the duke game. diehard fans here!
Miss A...it can't be both, you must pick one. and even if your team loses...you MUST NEVER wish good for the team that is not yours...it is the the NC way...
so in that spirit...
give me a B
give me a U
give me a T
give me a T
what do you have...
BUTT...BUTT...BUTT...
GO BUTT-LER
Watching the game right now. How about Cortlen?
No fan-dom can ever compare to the delight of getting away with using naughty words!
Sorry Jana, here we must disagree. I live in Indiana and baskeball is not just a game, it's a way of life. Have to root for Butler!! Go Bulldogs!!
(besides Duke wins all the time ;)
Um, Anon, surely you don't think you have to tell someone who lived in Durham that "basketball is not just a game."
We bleed blue.
AND WAAAHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO DEVILS!!!!! (And great game, Butler!)
The announcer said it right. Butler didn't loose tonight, but Duke won. I'll bet most people never thought it would be that close the WHOLE game. A game that the team could be proud of. And just imagine if that hail Mary from half court that caught rim would have gone in!!! Arg! Way to go, guys. Great job.

Butler Class of '00
How long did he make it through the game? :)
go duke!
and we may always win during the SEASON, but duke is a chronic early exiter from the tourney.
It's been a LONG time since my brackets won any cash! go DUKE!
Crap! I always loved this blog.....until now!
UK Wildcats!! WooHoo!!!!
OH my gosh, too funny! That thought NEVER entered my mind until you mentioned it. My son isn't old enough to enjoy those lovely words. I'm sure there will come a day! Oh- and thanks for sharing Mason's story. Was great to read such a happy update today!
AHHHHH!!
I am
still
depressed
about
last night.
You and I both know that was a foul at the end!!! Come on!!! ;)
Sorry .....
GO BUTLER! !
To quote another blog I frequent, "Every time they win, a kitten in my heart is strangled." The evil empire chalked another undeserved win last night.
Go HEELS! Revenge will be ours.
UNC '93
I always root for Duke unless there is a compelling reason not to. As last night, being a Butler alum, it was incumbent upon me to root for the Bulldogs. They acquitted themselves honorably. A FG at the buzzer would have been nice, though.
Awesome game! And our 4 1/2 year old twins love the 'butt' language also! So glad to know they're normal!!
I'm a BYU fan all the way, but my brother-in-law is currently going to the University of Utah and every time he comes over, dresses in head-to-toe red. Last week at dinner my son said "I hate BYU, I like University of Utah" much to the disdain of his mother. It broke my heart a little.
Hilarious! And I have to agree, there's NO SUCH THING as excessive school pride. We're big fans of The Alabama Crimson Tide. And since we don't live in Alabama, we find it even more important to instill the love in our girls. I questioned if I had gone too far when their first "baby sign" (so to speak) was "TOUCHDOWN, ALABAMA!" Nahhhh...
My husband and I went to UNC. I may continue to read your blog. Maybe. But congrats anyway. If UNC is gonna have a sucky b-ball team, Duke may as well have a great one. Whatever. :)
Just laughed my BUTT off.
HAha.. i love how he spelled Butler!
